Cancel airtime plan, but continue device plan

I've had a contract with Vodafone just over a year now. It's a 24 month airtime plan and 36 month device plan. I've been pretty unhappy with the service provision from Vodafone, so I want to cancel my airtime plan and pay the cancellation fee, but I still have a lot left to pay on my device plan.

Can I do this and switch network or will the device be locked to Vodafone? I'm happy to continue paying the phone for the remainder and then start a sim contract on another network, but I'm unsure if the phone will be able to use the sim?

edited to add:  Networks don't lock phones and the phone will take any SIM.
