Hi,
I with to pay my mobile bill in full which is about £114 then upgrade through a third party.
Vodafone is telling me i can do that but i'd have to either switch to pay as you go or lose my number.
I was told this by 3 people including a manager.
Is there any truth in this?

The first thing to do is ask this question in the forum search facility where you will be able to find examples of what you are asking.
You won't lose the number but to upgrade through a third party will mean the previous contract will need to be cancelled. This is completed by requesting Vodafone to put the number on PAYG taking 30 days to complete, the quicker way is to port the number out to any other network and back in on the new third party contract, takes 48 hours to complete at the most.
