Ending mobile contract early

My son wants to pay off his contract which enabled him to have a new phone, it is due to finish in July, does he then just need to get a new contract or can he just carry on paying his monthly fee for data calls etc?

If your Son pays off the contract, he continues paying and leaves the direct debit in place, the contract will continue on a 30 day roll over basis until he contacts Vodafone to upgrade with a new phone.
