Hello!
I'm close to turning 18 and I'd like to take out a phone contract in my own name to start my credit....
I currently have a SIM only contract in my Dad's name paying £27 a month. On this current contract, since October, I have had the option to upgrade the plan (which I would like to upgrade to the new iPhone).
So, I guess I am asking:
I've read somewhere that you will not be able to upgrade a contract after transferring over something (don't know if it meant. a contract) until 90 days have passed, which I'd like to avoid...
Thanks,
Nathan

Hi @Nathan1258
Looking at Transfer-of-ownership/form/
“We can only process your request if you pass the necessary ID and credit checks, and meet these criteria:
Another option although I'm not sure will apply asit's in your Dad's name is “Moving old vodafone number onto new Vodafone Contract. Credits to @AnnS
There are two ways this can be done.
1. Cancel the old contract and ask for the number to be moved to PAYG. The number will be scheduled to move to PAYG after 30 days. You will then receive a new PAYG SIM card to activate and top up a small amount to get it active on the network. You will then be able to transfer the number to the new contract.
2. Ask Vodafone for a PAC code, move the old number to an alternative network, use the SIM as PAYG on the other network and ask for a PAC code to move the number onto the new contract.
If your original contract near it’s end date ?
If not then actioning the above would end it and invoke any relavent early termination fee. ”

Yes @Nathan1258
You are going to need your Dad's help for this, he will need to do the upgrade before the Change of Ownership.
Vodafone will be doing a identity and credit check, presumably you have some previous credit history to base the check. Also, this is a big 24 month financial commitment for you to take on.
The other alternative is to split the account, this will give you control over the contract and paying the bill but with your Dad still being the main account holder.
edited to add: You may be able to add student discount to the account. See here: Student Discount

Thanks for your reply @annS,
If I split the plan with him, who would be getting the credit check? Me or him as I would prefer it to be me as this would be the whole point in me getting a contract?
Thanks,
Nathan

Vodafone wouldn't be doing a credit check @Nathan1258 it would still be your father's account.
I only mentioned it as a workaround should there be any problem with the credit check.
Yes @Nathan1258 Vodafone would only do a credit check after you had accepted the contract into your name.

@AnnS I am assuming they would credit check me upon transferring ownership of the account with the contract on it though?
