New roaming charges explanation

Hi all - please can someone kindly clarify a few things for me re the new roaming charges.

1) Are there charges for receiving calls or texts? The Vodafone website keeps pointing to the "Roaming Charge Checker", but it doesn't give an answer!

2) Tied with Q1 - can you roam without paying the £2 to £6 a day charge? A single text message would usually cost less than this even roaming.

3) In what circumstances does WiFi calling / texts work abroad? From what I can gather, this is prohibited but Vodafone state it does work in some circumstances.

All in the costs seems very high - both EE and Three will offer a £10 roam add on that lasts for 30 days, which includes EU and some worldwide destinations (incl USA and Australia!).

Hi @stooch

Full confirmation from Vodafone.

There are no charges to receive calls when roaming after 6 January.  Receiving calls won't incur any charges.

I would just make sure you have mobile and roaming data turned off and use WiFi where possible for data usage.

Hello @stooch

This is the link I use when trying to help people with questions in regards to Roaming.

Costs-and-charges/travelling-abroad.

In regards to Calling Over Wi-Fi is it this you've seen on the Vodafone support pages  ?

vodafone-wi-fi-calling Terms and Conditions.

11. The use of Wi-Fi Calling whilst roaming is prohibited and is not supported. However, in certain circumstances it may be possible to enable Wi-Fi Calling whilst abroad and where used additional charges will apply. "

I believe what Vodafone are meaning is that Calling Over Wi-Fi is only meant for UK use and shouldn't be used, however if you do turn thus on and it does work then Roaming Charges will apply.

Another option is to check the phone is Unlocked to all networks and use a local sim card and or use Wi-Fi.

Apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to name a couple can be used as an alternative.

I hope that helps.

Hi thanks for the replies back!

Yes these were all the pages I was looking at.

In particular, the costs for receiving calls/texts was my biggest concern and is not shown anywhere on the VF website - if it's free for pay monthly that's great news (I found for PAYG it costs as much as £1.30 per minute to receive calls)

The WiFi calling is not a big issue - if receiving calls is free, then I can simply use an alternative (cheaper) SIM to make calls/texts and avoid VFs daily charges.

Thanks

It's free at the moment to receive calls in most countries @stooch but not sure after the 6 January.

I will get further clarification on this for you to make sure the information is correct.  You will probably get a reply from the Social Team with a confirmation on charges to receive calls.

@stooch The only thing I can find at the moment is this link: Roaming Updates I will get back to the thread soon.

@stooch edited to return to the thread this morning.  As far as is known there is no charge to receive calls, it's just being double checked by Vodafone, I will return to the thread when full confirmation has been received.

Hi,

Where did you find the charges of £1.30 per minute to receive calls on PAYG?

Thanks
