iPhone 12 - No 5G on dual sim and now no 5G roaming

This is actually an edited post as I originally was asking Vodafone why 5G wasn't available on the iPhone 12.

After some further Google searching, it appears you're only as strong as you're weakest link which in this case seems to be Apple.

So I've always rolled my eyes a little at Vodafone's bold claim of '5G in more places'. Mainly because they're the only network to claim credit for the rollout of 5G on partner networks (specifically the Vodafone networks in Ireland, Spain, Germany and Italy).

But you know what, that's fine.

So I bought myself the iPhone 12 Pro a couple of weeks ago and since then, have an ever growing snagging list.

  1. It's sold as a 5G device
  2. You can't use 5G when using dual sim
  3. You can't roam on 5G it seems

Apple seem to blame the carriers, specifically they say:

Carriers around the world are still rolling out 5G roaming support. If you turn on data roaming, you can get cellular data over 4G or LTE networks when you travel. You can also get a local SIM or eSIM and use it as a single line with 5G wherever available.

So I've shared with Apple that my carrier isn't the issue. They've had 5G roaming for some time now.

For a 1100 GBP phone, I'm quite disappointed that it appears to have been rushed to market. In addition to the multiple 5G issues, I also was disappointed to find that if I toggle one of the lines to off, it is immediately removed from iMessage.

This means people messaging you will suddenly see they're sending a text (chargeable) or a picture message (again, chargeable)

Then when you toggle the line back to on, you have to re-set up iMessage every time.

Completely defeats the point of using the line when travelling. I am supposed to be in Singapore at the end of December (not holding my breath) but toggling the line off and on, will trigger the 6 GBP daily roaming fee when it sends the text to activate iMessage.

So over to Apple, let's see what they do...
