Smart N8 (unlocked now now Asda mobile) camera app stopped opening and sw update fails

I have a Smart N8 (VFD 610) I have had for a few years. I had it on Vodafone to begin, then unlocked it and began using Asda mobile PAYG. Asda recently moved from using EE to Vodafone network. That was all OK. At the end of last week (actually on Saturday 6th Nov) I found the camera app wouldn't open; on clicking it, it appears to be starting but just quick black screen then it closes. I looked in About phone to check for sw updates. It says Vodafone have an important software update available. I switched on Wifi (connected) yet when I try to update it just gives error 'Attention Download failed. Check your network'. Current version is Android 7, kernel 3.18.35, baseband version MOLY.LR9.W1444.MDLWTG.MP.V110.5.P50, Security patch level 5 Macrh 2017, Custom built version 100FCN2. Update version says 7.0-160FCN1. Am I correct this should just download over Wifi and install?

I can see that you've been advised to try clearing the cache, but I'm not sure whether you've also tried clearing data?   That would clear everything and reset all the settings to default, but often resurrects recalcitrant apps.  If that fails, I believe there are other camera apps on Google Play, but I've never used one, so can't offer a recommendation, I'm afraid.  User comments are often a useful guide as they can point up aspects you might not like.   There's no harm in trying a few, as they can easily be uninstalled if they don't do what you want.

Hi hrym

Yes I have cleared the camera app cache and data without success.

Thanks for your answer though.

Unless you are able to install the update @gpusr7  you won't be able to get the camera working.  If you go into camera application from your settings >  camera settings scroll down to about camera, click on it, you will be able to see if the application if up to date and you have the latest version, this should be version 11.0.15.80.

The update for the camera would have been sent with the new software version you are unable to install.  You are on old software and this is where you are having the camera problems. Try doing a factory reset, this will clear the phone, back everything up first and then checking for the update.

My recommendation is to take the phone into a Vodafone Store they will be able to advise accordingly as to whether a repair is a viable option but it's a discontinued phone  If you use Google you may even be able to find an independent mobile phone repairer.
