Archos 5g With Vodafone 3g Card

Hi,

I have just taken out a contract for a 2nd mobile data sim to use with my archos 5g pmp - which can accept a 3g sim card. Sending sms works ok but to use 3g I need to enter the vodaphone network settings for the archos to access the web: server, authentication type, user name, password, proxy and port. Can you please provide me with the correct information?

Regards,

Nick.

Hello nickf

I'm afraid we're doing a slight amount of guess work here as we're not familiar (in terms of being hands-on) with the Archos 5G. :(

Having said that though, I think the best way forward is for you to submit the available options via a post, i.e. note down all the options in your settings section as well as the current setting you've inputted so far. If we can look through everything we stand a better chance of trouble shooting this correctly.

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi,

server name: internet
authentication: pap (also chap and none)
username: web
password: web
proxy: 212.183.137.012
port: 8799

It works via wi-fi but not via 3G but it confirms the 3g connection is made and I can send sms.

The connection details in the status screen are:

gsm network: 3g/3g+
IP: 10.57.254.234
netmask: 255.255.255.255
gateway: 0.0.0.0
dns: 10.205.65.68

Regards,

Nick.

Hi Nickf,

Are you saying your applications connect to 3G data, but your browser doesn't? I don't have much Linux experience I'm afraid, and never seen the Archos until this thread

Sadly, without the device in hand we can only speculate. The first set of details you posted are correct, the second will be your dynamic details assigned upon connection. These don't offer a clue I'm afraid :(

I really couldn't advise further on this - I suggest perhaps contacting Archos Support for further information or help. You can always test the SIM in another device or phone to ensure that it's not your connection at fault.

Please let us know how you get on!

Hi,

The opera web browser connects to the web via wifi with no problem so this seems to exonerate the OS - but it doesn't connect using 3g. However I am able to send sms etc so I am obviously connected to the network and the status indicator also says that I am connected. Is there any way to "trace" what is coming from the device if anything if you have the ip / imei? Archos werent much help.

Regards,

Nick.

Hi Nick

We don't have any tools to activel 'trace' the connection, and your connectivity to the network might just be gsm (ie calls and sms) but not Data.

As pointed out by Daz we have no way of replicating your situation or comparing a similar device setup, the problem with speculation is that we have no way of confirming or testing our support, :(

If Archos isn't being helpfull we may have to continue cycling through all possible connection settings, problem is we don't have any for the device, :(

Hi

Sorry I've no experience with Archos..

If anything like unix and you can get a command prompt you can check if you have a correct route.
On one Ubuntu system here I connect to lan so had defaultroute setup to adsl and I found this
often isn't replaced by that for the modem. I normally ping out once connection is setup.
$ ping -c 2 81.187.61.69
That will either get a couple of replies or "no route to host" and if the latter the route can be set
manually.
Next after getting a ping response to ip address I'll try
$ ping -c 2 ftp.lordynet.org
That will either get similar replies or "host name not found"
For some reason the dns returned from setting up the connection isn't always being used and
previous dns ips are still in file /etc/resolv.conf , ie differs from those in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf.

Add to above that some of vodafone dns servers seem to fail to respond. I've used "dig" to
confirm this and then checked and confirmed lookups from public dns servers are mostly
working depending on network latency.

If you hit a bad vodafone dns the chances are that if you reconnect a few times you will
get allocated ones that respond. By then my notebook battery is run down and or I've
run out of time and it's all been wasted effort.

This is something I've seen a number of times before - it's cropped up with configuring netbooks etc. for use with USB modems.

However, I'm not sure if there's a shell / terminal emulator on the Archos device- chances are, i't's just "Linux as an appliance" (and I haven't checked that it even does have a Linux kernel - just going on what's said above)

Did anyone get the Archos 5g to work with a Vodafone dongle sim? or could you please give me any information on how to get this PMP to work with Vodafone.

I have tried the following;

I put my sim card from my PAYG dongle into my Archos and nothing happens, I can not connect. I have tried all the settings listed on this tread but to no avail. I have tried my 3 sim card in from my phone and this works straight away, as does my friends data sim card from O2. Both of these did not need any settings put into my archos.

Any help will be appriciated.
