Solution

BT Infinity and Sure Signal.

Jimfew
4: Newbie

I have just changed ISP to BT Infinity. As expected, my Sure Signal has failed. I have tried all sorts of resets and have asked Vodafone support to reset my device and do a network reset. I have also done a hard reset myself. It still does not work. I have opened all the necessary ports on my router (not the BT hub but a Draytek 2820).

I wonder if I also need to ask BT to open ports on their servers? Is this necessary? My old ISP, Be*, did not restrict any ports but BT may be different.

Can anyone advise me.

My VSS number is 21221070754

Can anyone list all the ports the VSS needs to be open (as up to date as possible).

Many thanks, Jim.

My setup is with a 2850Vn with VDSL and yes, I do have a 3G data signal through the VSS

Hi this is an interesting thread that offers a glimmer of hope...

My VSS worked fine with the BT Business Hub V3 when connected via ADSL however I have now upgraded to high speed BT Infinity and the Sure Signal V1 now will not work (even after all the many troubleshooting procedures followed etc.etc.) This suggests to me that the "blockage" lies within the Open Reach modem that the BT Hub now connects through as it worked fine before that piece of equipment was added to the setup.

I'm loath to buy a replacement modem/router without being certain that it is going to work with the VSS so can someone truly confirm that a Draytek 2850n connected directly to the BT Line works as a one box solution that also works with VSS?

Hi Christo13,

Looking at previous posts in this thread it seems that this particular router does work.

This isn't something I can test for you unfortunately but I'm sure other members of the community will be along to provide advice shortly.

Thanks,

Kay

Ok...

Well I've taken the plunge anyway and ordered a 2850n.

I'll report back with my results.... fingers crossed!

YES!

It works...plug and play, job done...

So if you want VSS to work on BT Infinty get a Draytek Vigor 2850n and plug it in. It sorts itself out with no need for port forwarding or any other messing with settings.

However the Draytek 2850n is an advanced device with a bewildering array of options and menus on the web interface that aren't novice friendly. Setup the BT connection according to this guide http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb/kb_vigor_v2850_setup.html and things should work with ease.

Christo13, and anyone else using a 2850n, please can you clarify whether you get 3G data as well as the ability to make/receive calls and texts.
The reason I ask it that, despite having a H symbol on my various devices, they do not get an 3G data. Apps like email, web browsers, anything using data, just waits and waits, ultimately timing out. I get this problem with a Draytek 2850vn with direct vdsl connection, a 2830 and the 2850vn and a cheap TP-Link router via their wan ports to the BT supplied modem, and all exhibit the same issue, no 3G data getting through.
I've tried different MTU's, the DF-check flag disabled etc, nothing has worked. I'm pretty exasperated. I don't have anything special setup on any of the routers. Port redirection only appears to make the VSS reconnect quicker. Hardware resets of the VSS have made no difference.
All the routers are on the latest firmwares.
Thanks
Mike

Hi,

Yes I get full VSS 3G Data with the 2850n connected directly to the incoming BT line.... and did do with the default settings straight out of the box so I've no idea why the 2850vn wouldn't work as well..?

(However I have been suffering from erratic broadband download speeds and hangs since I switdhed from the BT Business Hub 3 to the 2850n but as I'd only had Infinity for a few days prior to switching I can't tell whether this is down to BT or the 2850n. I suspect BT as this problem is in no way consistent)

FYI
I updated my Sky broadband to FTTC today. I'm using a standard BT Openreach modem with a Sky router plugged in (one of the new square ones with a big Sky logo on it.
I moved my Sure Signal from the Zen FTTC connection on my business line (that used the Draytek V2850vn). It's now working perfectly - calls, texts, 3G data, all fine.
My Sky line and Zen line are in the same property (I work from home), and both lines go back to the same green roadside cabinet. I wish I could say for sure that the problem was with either the 2850vn or Zen, but I can't. However, I can say that the Sure Signal will work over a PPPoE connection.

I thought I would add my findings and solutions to BT Infinity with the Suresignal 2 and Homehub 5.

First, open the ports as described elsewhere, under Advanced Settings > Firewall > Port Forwarding, and adding in a new App which I called Vodasuresignal, opening TCP/UDP (ALL) for ports 50, 4500, 500, 123, 8, 1723, 53, 67, 68, 33434-33445

Then under Advanced Settings > Home Network > Devices, click on the Mac address of the SureSignal, which is written on the Suresignal, then on that screen I named it Suresignal and selected the radio button 'Always use this IP address'.

Then under Settings (not advanced) > Port Forwarding, add Vodasuresignal to go to Suresignal.

That's the settings in the Homehub5 done.

Now, I de-registered my Suresignal and re-registered it. Left it unplugged overnight, plugged it in again in the morning and it worked.

But... here lies the problem when it stops working.... if your router reboots and your external IP address changes, (as BT don't provide you with a fixed one). Then you need to reset the Suresignal by plugging it in with a paper clip held in the reset hole on the back for a few seconds, then let it boot and wait until it connects again (sometimes hours). ....ALSO, because of this point, I believe Vodafone COULD fix this with a firmware update to the SureSignals or a Server-Side modification!!!!

Note also, on iPhone, iPhones are useless at picking up the strongest 3g signal, so, if they don't then go to Settings > Mobile, then un-check 'Enable 3G', wait for about 20 seconds then re-check it and wait another 20 seconds. If your Suresignal is up and running you will now be on it. (I often have to repeat this when I come back into the house or the iPhone will just try to hold on to a weaker outside signal, you don't get this problem at all with many Android phones or Blackberry handsets for example as they constantly successfully look for and latch on to the strongest signal).

One last thing, on Homehub4 with BT's ADSL you need to do exactly the same, and the same resets if your External IP changes. (proved this for someone else).

I now have no problems until the points where my external IP changes.

I have had this running for months now and it took weeks to ascertain and make sure it is correct.

Our Sure Signal has stopped working since we were given a fixed IP address by BT. We are using BT Infinity with a Draytek 2820n and was working fine until the new IP address was given to us which suggests that the new IP address is being blocked by Vodafone. How can we go about checking the IP address?
