Connecting Sure Signal v1 to BT Home Hub 4

k1pperman
4: Newbie

Had SS working on sky router. Moved to BT 2 weeks ago. Followed instructiuons on port forwarding etc (same as for sky) but can't get a connection through. Have tried resetting (holding down reset key, turning power of while still holding button down etc.) and detregistering and reregistering but nothing seems to work. What else can  I do?

Hi @k1pperman,

Your tracroute looks fine.

It could be something has been changed by your ISP (internet service provider) so please check the following:

Check that your Sure Signal has been assigned an internal IP address by your router.

The Sure Signal must be assigned an internal IP address by your router. If your router supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), this must be enabled as doing so will enable the router to assign an IP address to your Sure Signal automatically.

For more instructions on how to do this, please check your router manual or contact your ISP or router manufacturer.

If your router or network configuration doesn’t allow DHCP, you’ll need to assign a static IP address to your Sure Signal's MAC Address by using your router's configuration panel. Please contact your ISP or router manufacturer for instructions on how to do this. The MAC address can be found on the sticker at the back of the Sure Signal.

Manually configure your router to allow port-forwarding.
In most cases, routers support a system called Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP), which sets up port-forwarding for you automatically. If you’ve got a complicated network setup, or a complex router, you may need to enter these settings manually.

Please see the following for a list of IP addresses and port numbers that need to be forwarded to your Sure Signal's internal IP address. For instructions on how to do this, we recommend you contact your ISP or Router Manufacturer, or refer to the default guide for your particular make and model, over at http://portforward.com.

Destination IP Addresses:

  • 183.133.177
  • 183.133.178
  • 183.133.179
  • 183.133.181
  • 183.133.182
  • 183.131.128/26

Ports and Protocols:

  • 8 – TCP/UDP                 (All routers)
  • 50 – TCP/UDP               (All routers)
  • 53 – TCP/UDP               (Virgin Super Hubs)
  • 67 – UDP                      (Virgin Super Hubs)
  • 68 – UDP                      (Virgin Super Hubs)
  • 123 – UDP                    (All routers)
  • 500 – UDP                    (All routers)
  • 1723 – TCP/UDP           (BT Home Hubs)
  • 4500 – UDP                   (All routers)
  • 33434 – 33445 – UDP    (Virgin Super Hubs)

Please note that in the above list of IP addresses, the notation "212.183.131.128/26" means the complete range of IP addresses between 212.183.131.128 and 212.183.131.191

Your router also needs to assign the Sure Signal with a DNS (Domain Name Server) address via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

Thanks,

Rodney

Hi Rodney

Thanks for your response. Just to confirm DHCP is enabled and I have assigned the IP address to the Sure Signal device. UPnP is enabled but so is something called Extended UPnP Security (No idea what that is but could try turning that off and test). The correct ports have been set up but for 123,500 and 4500 I had set up "ANY" protocol rather than UDP. I've now changed that and testing the connection again (but that feels like clutching at straws). If you are telling me that everything is ok from a vodafone perspective then I will be going back to BT and cancelling my contract and going back to sky, because I might be saving a few quid on my broadband but at least I could use my mobile at home

John

Well that's it my patience is exhausted. I would like a categoric statement from a vodafone techie that all is ok at that end, then I can tell BT where to stick their router. Can you please provide that assurance, sooner rather than later please, this dragging on is not necessary.
John

Hi John

Since it worked before your change of ISP i highly doubt that the issue is at Vodafones end as no settings will have changed there. Before calling BT and telling them to shove it up thier you know what do you have your old sky router?

Im not 100% sure it will work but you could try setting that up and configuring it for use with BT to atleast rule out router config issues.

Yes I tried the sky router several days ago, didn't work. I've just tried using a port forward checker which shows the ports aren't open, back to bt

Well I've enlisted with bt tech support and they have made some changes to my router settings. If this works I will post the changes here

Changes made and the techie assures me the ports are open, but when I use a web based port check tool that doesn't confirm that they are. His explanation was that the ports are only open to the sure signal device so I wouldn't be able to check! Anyway SS reset last night I'll give it a few more hours. Although the lights flash in various sequences the main sequence is lights 1 and 2 solid and 4 flashing
