thanks for your input jayx but that didnt work either 
when i go to the modem list there is nothing there...
when i go to add modem it says no plug and play devices was detected and the usb was plaugged in at the time of searching for it

Hi Dannyx2010,
Even with a new laptop, it is alays worth checking different ports - amongst other thngs, it's possible that a lower-powered USB 1.0 port is being used, not a higher powered USB 2.0, which may affect how the dongle is recognised. If you haven't tried this yet, can you check this for me just in case.
There are couple of other things whch can be checked as well. Firstly, does the dongle work correctly on another computer or laptop? This would help by ruling out an issue with the dongle.
Secondly, can you check device manager for me on the computer to see if there is any record under CD Rom dreives, Modems, Ports (COM + LPT) or USB Controllers wih an alert icon beside it such as a yellow exclamation mark. This would mean that the drivers would be incorrect, which would affect the operation of the dongle. If you right click any you find you shold get an icon for updating the driver software.
Finally, can you check the icons listed in the systm box next to the clock on the toolbar to see if any state they are connected to a mass storage device when you don't have one in place. If you find one, this means that the modem has been mis-recognised so you just need to end that connection to free it up.
Let us know how you get on wth that.

. Sorry to hear you're experiencing problems, I've got a possible solution for you that's well worth trying.
-Firstly, ensure the modem is plugged in and then close any programs
-Go to Start > Control Panel > System
-Click on Device Manager
-Click the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
-If you see a Mass Storage Device or a Composite Device then right click and then uninstall
-Unplug the modem, wait 10 seconds and then re-insert
-If all goes well then the device manager screen should bounce up and down for a minute or so and your drivers will be correctly installed
-Try connecting again
Basically, what happens is that the K3760 modem installs the USB mass storage device and composite device before installing the modem drivers, if it sees a mass storage device in place already then it can cause issues, the process above rectifies this.
