Emails Lost In The Ether!

Hi I am a business user and spend most of my time in hotels _ I have been using a USB modem stick (Connect Lite) and apart from the restriction in sending file attachments it has worked well.

Recently occasional emails I send (via send.vodafone.net) seem to get lost and for the past day or two emails sent have been lost. I am on 3G great signal, incoming emails from ntlworld are fine. Internet access is fine but emails have stopped workling.

Any ideas? As you can imagine it is very irritating when you rely on the thing for business use. I know I can use NTL's webmail service but that doesn't really help as all my contacts are in outlook!

Cheers Dave

PS I've just sent myself a test email and it arrived. However, those I sent last night, copied to me haven't - it's as though there has been a problem and the emails in the system are just deleted. Is the what happens?

Vodafone (and some of it's customers  ) are aware of ongoing issues with send.vodafone.net
In my experience it's been not working properly for much of the past 2-3 weeks, but VF assure us they are on the case... (see other threads)

Hi Dave

Welcome back to the forum, :)

I looked at a similar issue for another forum member a few days ago, the problems simularly related to the send.vodafone.net smtp server, the delay is as yet unresolved but we are aware of some sort of smtp issues.

In the meantime I'd revert to your original SMTP servers (i.e as provided by your email provider) in an effort to jump-start it into action.

Thanks

if I put smtp.ntlworld.com (which is what is required when i am connected to my broadband at home) it just times out. I have to set my outgoing server to send.vodafone.net to get it to work.

I've seen several posts on the forum about people complaining about the service and yet it seems Vodafone are unable to resolve the problem.

Not working at all I can cope with, working I can cope with. Not knowing whether an email has been delivered is totally unacceptable. we are used to hitting send and assuming it arrives at the other end.

Do you know when this is likely to be resolved?

Cheers Dave

That's normal, most mailservers don't relay and if they do they get blaclisted and become unusable.

Some isps allow authenticated smtp on port 25 but this has problem of going via vodafone mail system and
may (in my experience will) hit blacklisting at remote mailservers.

Better than that your alternate isp may support smtps port 465 or smmsp 587 both of which my own
adsl provider supports as well as my own server supporting smtps. Both these ports appear from my checks
to exit vodafone from different ip blocks than does port 25 traffic so would also miss the blacklists but
at least on my own server port 465 bypasses most filters anyway. If supported it's only slightly more
difficult to setup than using normal smtp.

Sorry

I forgot to mention that many isps use different names for customer facing vs public facing servers
so
smtp.ntlworld.com has address 81:103.221.11
ntlworld.com has address 212.250.162.12
ntlworld.com mail is handled by smtpin.ntlworld.com
smtpin.ntpworld.com has address 81.103.221.10

You need to contact ntlworld both to find out if they offer such a service and if they do to get
server and login details which may not be same as you use when directly connected via ntl.

I have also been losing emails for quite a while now and my emails to support are being ignore in true big company style. I wonder how much of a refund they are going to offer us!

Thanks to both David and "moderator". However, I'm afraid i don;t really understand what either of you are talking about.

I have decided that if continues to be a problem I will just revert to using NTL's webmail facility which works fine. It's a damn nuisance from my perspective and it is a questionable that when you are in a Vodafone shop you ask the question "will I be able to do email over the USB Modem" the answer is of course "yes". The answer should be "yes, if you have access to your ISP webmail because our server doesn't work properly - sometimes it loses emails altogether and you won't be able to send emails with large attachments".

I know that this is not the fault of the support staff but it is incredibly annoying.

Thanks anyway

Cheers Dave

Since we do not offer a vodafone email address as part of your contract, it is generally assumed that you would have your own email address and provider. What we cannot take into account, however, is if, as is the case with NTL, that provider actively block you from sending emails from any other internet connection. This is something that is not working as a result of their action, and not ours, so ultimately the sales advice is correct to the best of our knowledge. Send.vodafone.net is what has been used as a workaround to these kind of restrictions, but is sadly not handling the extra pressure too well.

I'm glad the webmail service has at least given you a workable solution in the meantime :)
