Our phone signal went right down and Vodafone told me to switch the phone from 4G to 2G. It worked, but why? It’s not an acceptable solution.

No I agree but it is an interim solution @Willislnd
2g provides a more stable connection.
VoLTE aka 4g Calling has been released recently by Vodafone Uk for certain key cities and on certain phones which will when hopefully released widespread will give a better experience over a 4g connection.
Sometimes phones can have issues switching from 4g to 3G and 2g when a call is initiated which can cause issues and then can have issues switching back up when the call is completed.
