I am devastated. I have waited and saved for years to get a mortgage. Just reached the milestone and was approved for affordability only to get declined at the end of a 3 hour phone call because I failed the credit score.
after this, I checked my credit report only to find a missed payment in jan 2016 for Vodafone. It was at the end of a contract and the account had been closed. This was a final payment and as soon as I realised it was due I paid it.
Please someone help me, how can I fix this! My family are relying on me. I am heartbroken!

Hi @Clhalliday
I really do appreciate and understand how damaging a default and or marker can be ,and the difficulty in having one removed from a Credit File.
It's important to speak with Customer service first to clear up why this has happened before the Credit File Support Team can help.
Below in Bold is a help guide I have written which explains how to contact Vodafone and which department to ask your case to be referred to - i.e 'Vodafone Credit File Support Team' - and how to add a 'Notice of Correction' via Experian. It is Free to add the Notice of Correction. This gives you the tools to add your own notes up to 200 words on your Credit File to explain why the Default is showing.
It would only be worth adding this if you think the default is wrong and shouldn't have been applied. Please take into consideration that a Default will only be removed if it was reported on your Credit File incorrectly.
We do have a Vodafone Team here who read all posts and reply to guide and assist where necessary.

I have sent a letter and an email to Vodafone.
I am hoping they respond to these ASAP so I hopefully do not miss out on our dream home!
i can't believe that someone who has always been financially disciplined would be so disadvantaged and have to go through all of this to get a mortgage!

Hi.
Unfortunately we do see situations where for example a person has given the required notice to end a contract but then cancel the Direct Debit too early before they receive the £0 bill and sorry your leaving letter, which gives Vodafone no option to either take final payments or indeex give any refunds etc.
In these cases the default is invariably warranted and would remain on the Credit file for 6 years. Showing as outstanding then settled when paid.

I'm sorry to hear this @Clhalliday. So that our dedicated team can look into this further to help, please follow the steps in the private message that will be sent to you shortly.
A member of the team will then be in touch.

Unfortunately Vodafone do not respond to unsolicited emails, and experiences reported on this forum suggest that you're unlikely to get much further with an unsolicited letter either. I would very strongly recommend that you do as suggested in the PM which Natasha has sent you, that is by far your best hope.
I would be irresponsible if I didn't also point out that a default/late payment will only be removed if it is found to be unjustfied (as may possibly be the case here) and that lenders nowadays need little or no excuse to weasel out of granting you a loan - as you have already seen. I wish you the very best of luck with this !

I'll second that. There is a proces for dealing with queries like this and you can speak to the people who make the ultimate decision. They will have access to the full account history and will make a decision based on the full circumstances. They're not unhelpful and you're not dealing with "computer says no", even if the final result isn't what you want.
