Mobile Broadband - Error 1714 on install

My friend had problems with web-pages not loading, possibly because he was in a remote location trying at peak times but he uninstalled the VMC software and it won't re-install from the dongle, it says 'configuration corrupt'. I downloaded the latest full version (9.4.4) of the software which attempts to install passing the point at which 'Install' needs to be clicked but fails with 'Error 1714 The older version cannot be removed'. I've removed the dial-up connection and checked that there are no entries in Device Manager as mentioned in another post and I can't find anything relating to Huawei, Vodafone or VMC anywhere on the machine but it still fails.

Hi tonyh98

Welcome to the eForum :)

Error 1714 is a common Windows error. Error 1714 is usually caused by missing system files, wrong system settings or a corrupted registry file. Run a registry scan to check for registry errors & other system problems. 90% of the time this will fix the cause of the error

When I had this message (trying to reinstall AVG) i did search for files via the start menu. In your case the word Vodafone and search your hard drive. It is nearly always a Registry problem cause by the Windows uninstaller.

Best wishes

Thanks very much for the reply and for replying so quickly. If it's a windows problem I suppose I can format the drive and do a full install of windows, there isn't really much on the machine. But, I investigated some more and looked at the Event Viewer, so if it's any help to anyone, it has two errors, the second of which is interesting, and an information item -

- and as a last attempt I created an entry for 'PackageName' in that registry key. Running the installation then lets me browse for a .msi installation package, but it claims the Vodafone installation msi I found in 'Application Data/Temp' is invalid. Maybe it wants to just delete one and I could just direct it to a copy of something else, as the old installation msi is inside its .exe. Must say this is beyond what I understand and I'm just making a last attempt to possibly avoid having to install windows.
Thanks very much for any thoughts or help.

Hi tonyh98,

It definitely looks like this is a registry error. As we're not microsoft certified, I'm unable to go through any registry changes with you, I'd hate to make things worse. Maybe one of our more techy forum users can assist you with this?

Alternatively, a windows re-install will certainly resolve your issue.

Let me know how you get on :).
