Mobile Broadband - K4505 & RAS error 635

Hi all - have got a K4505 dongle running on XP SP3. Installation went fine, running Vodafone Mobile Broadband Lite v10.1.0.25677. When trying to connect I occasionally get RAS error 666 (on the first connection attempt only, and only about 50% of the time), followed by RAS error 635 on every subsequent attempt to connect. Have tried all the suggestion in the RAS dialogue box (delete and recreate the modem, wait a little etc), no luck - as yet I've not been able to connect using the dongle. I'm in a 3G signal area, and the logo is flashing blue to indicate / confirm that.

I've had a look at http://forum.vodafon...nd-resolutions/ and don't see anything specific to my situation / combination of hardware and error message. I've also seen http://forum.vodafon...error-code-635/ but again don't see anything specific to the K4505, and I'm a bit wary of making things worse rather than better!

Has anyone else seen this error using the K4505, or any advice on what I can try to resolve the issue?

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,

As you have already tried the latest version of VMC the next step is to completely uninstall the modem unsing a different USB port if possibble reinstall it from scratch.

This should then reinitialise all drivers etc in the registery for the modem and then work, if you can give this a go and let us know how you get on.

Hi - tried that, same result. I can send SMS via the dongle btw, just no broadband access.

What can I try next?

Hi timfawcett,

Thanks for your reply. I've not come across error 666 before (sounds ominous though ), but I am familiar with error 635. Normally this would be resolved by updating to the latest version of VMC. I notice that you're currently using VMC version 10 which hasn't been approved for UK usage yet. Whilst this software does work for some users, as it's not supported by us yet, I'd recommend uninstalling it and downloading VMC 9.4.6 as this definitely works with UK modems.

If that doesn't resolve your issue, another fix I've seen work in the past is to setup a manual dial-up connection. This can be done as follows:

-Go to Start > Control Panel
-Double click Phone and Modem Options
-Click the Modems Tab (if it asks for location info, fill this in)
-Highlight the Huwaei Modem and click Properties
-Click the Advanced Tab
-In the Extra Initialisation Command field type in at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" and press OK
-Go back to the Control Panel and double click Network Connections
-Create a new Dial-up Internet connection with the following settings
-Name: Vodafone
-Phone Number: *99#
-Username: web
-Password: web
-This can then be found by going to Start > Connect To > Vodafone

Give that a go and let me know how you get on :).

Interestingly it's version 10 supplied on the dongle itself - are you selling a product you don't (yet) support?

I'll try your suggestions and let you know...

OK, the manual dial-up connection worked, but still no joy with the VMB v10 - will try downgrading to the earlier version...

Hi timfawcett,

Thanks for your reply, I'm pleased to hear that the dial-up connection is working for you :).

In regards to version 10 of VMC, it's a little bit confusing. The Vodafone Business website states that it's not supported for UK modems, however some of the newer modems come with it pre-installed. I'll seek to clarify this and will post when I have the definitive answer.

In the meantime, see how you get on with VMC 9.4.6, if it doesn't work then you'll be able to use the dial-up connection to connect instead :).

If you do need any further assistance then don't hesitate to ask. Also if you'd like to leave me any feedback about how I've answered your query then please click the link in my signature.

Hi George

Downgraded to 9.4.6 of VMC, still not working. Interestingly I left the dongle in when restarting after the installation, VMC detected it (under Manage Devices), with it's device name, ie 'Vodafone Mobile Broadband Network Adapter (Huawei) #2' and set as default however its status was inactive and I couldn't connect with it. I did an 'add device' and ran through the steps, it is now detected with a device name of just 'K4505' but is active. However I still get RAS error 666 or 635 using VMC.

The manual dialup connection still works luckily.

(The dongle was bought on a business contract btw)...

Further update - when the VMC software is running, another dial-up connection is listed in Network Connections - 'Vodafone Mobile Connect'. If I try and manually connect with this connection I get 'Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device). It's also set to use 'Standard Modem' rather than the Huawei, and dial 'ppp' rather than '*99#'. However if I change those values I can manually connect using the connection, but still get RAS 635 when using VMC...

Is the VMC creating this dial-up connection, and if so is it using the wrong modem / phone number?

Hi timfawcett,

Thanks for your reply. The other dial-up connection will have been created by VMC so I'm not sure why it's giving the incorrect information . Luckily, you don't actually need VMC in order to connect so I'd recommend just using the dial-up connection instead.

I suspect that the problem with VMC may be caused by a software conflict. As I say, you don't have to use VMC, but as a way of trying to fix the software conflict I'd recommend performing a clean boot as follows to establish where the issue lies.

1. Click Start > Run.

2. In the Run window, type following text:

msconfig

3. Click OK.

The System Configuration Utility appears.

4. Click the General tab.

Click on Selective Startup and make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked.

(You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).

5. Click the Services tab.

6. Select Hide all Microsoft Services.

Warning Do not skip this step. You must hide the Microsoft Services before you go on to step 7.

7. Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab.

8. Click Apply > OK.

9. Click Restart.

If error is cleared then indicates a conflict with another service or application running on the machine. This will require enabling each service/application one by one and retesting to find the service/application at fault.

Note: When you have completed your troubleshooting, follow the steps in the next section to configure Windows to perform a Normal startup.

To Reverse Clean Boot:

Restore your computer to its original settings

1. Rerun MSConfig utility as detailed above

2. On the general tab click Normal Startup.

3. Click OK.

4. Click Restart.
