Mobile Broadband - Port forwarding on 3G

STATICIP
Not applicable
Hi

I am trying to connect to my server via ssh (port 22) using Vodafone's 3g service. My set up is a vodafone 3g card which uses a device called a Sierra Wireless Raven XE modem. I have configured port forwarding as explained in http://sierrawireless.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/733
The server connected to the modem via an ethernet cable. I can connect outbound to the Internet fine from my server so there isn't any connectivity issues. However I cannot connect inbound to my server.

My IP is dynamically assigned from Vodafone and it's a 212.xxx.xxx.xxx address. After spending 45 minutes on the phone with Vodafone today and speaking to 4 different technicians, no one seems to think Vodafone supports remote access for their 3g service. Vodafone weren't very helpful to say the least. However I have heard this is possible and is regularly used by ATM's etc.

I have also spoken to the manufacture (Sierra Wireless - very helpful) and they say "You may also want to contact your networkcarrier .... the requests are not routing from thecarrier to the Raven but connectivity from the Raven to the Internet areworking."

Any help on this matter would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi STATICIP

Let me firstly welcome you to the Vodafone eForum. :)

What you are attempting to do with the dongle isn't what it was originally designed to do. This is not to say it's not possible, but the information to set this up is not readily available to our general Tech advisors.

The good news is, we have a bespoke team, who specialize in queries of this type, and they may be able to get this working for you.

The team are called the M2M (machine 2 machine) Team, and can be contacted on 08700 712 829. Check out the M2M Team page if you want a little more background information.

Let me know if you've any further questions.

You need to setup two endpoints not one. Vodafone mobile broadband will not accept incoming connections. There are third party
providers or you can setup a ssh tunnel or vpn between two systems you control

eg. Notebook <=> two way ssh connection via mobile broadband <=> remote server accepting incoming connections

There may also be a time limit on open ssh connections or idle connections.
