Mobile Broadband - pay & go abroad?

I've just got my new pay & go USB. Trying to work out the charging structure I spotted the following Vodafone page:

Q: How much does it cost to use data abroad with Mobile Broadband on my laptop?

A: The TopUp and go USB modem can not be used abroad.

Does this mean I can't use my new dongle abroad?

Assuming I can & I'm misunderstanding this (quite possible!!!) how does the charging work whilst abroad? I've seen the cost as £10/50MB but there seems to be some suggestion that its a minimum daily purchase? So if I want to just check say Mail 2 Web each morning its going to be £10 min. a day?

And being pay & go, do I just stick money in my Vodafone account or do I convert it into available data?

Any assistance gratefully recieved!

You are better off in most cases buying a PAYG dongle in the land you intend to visit, I just purchased a PAYG dongle from T-Mobile Holland, the maximum you pay per day is €4.50 and the credit never runs out, plus the dongle is Sim lock free.

Joe,

Good advice but I'm going to Spain. I wouldn't be able to buy one till I got there - I've tried & they won't post to the UK. And to buy one when you're there you - apparently - need to have a resident ID number which as an occaisional visitor I don't have.......lot of hassle when I'd really just like to use a UK Vodafone USB at a reasonable rate

Hello gaz2

The page you discovered regarding Payt usb abroad is accurate.

Unfortunately there is no facility to roam with the Payt modems.

Thanks to joeking for his advice.

Al, I asked your colleague Amy 3 days ago before I bought this, would suit my needs. Don't believe me, this is the exchange: Amy: Hello, you're chatting with Amy, one of Vodafone's online sales specialists. May I take your name please? You: Can you let me know if your current broadband USB dongle is the type that would work abraod, specifically in Spain? Apologies, its Gary at this end. Amy: Hi Gary Amy: yes the pay as you go as well pay monthly dongles work abroad Amy: May I know which one are you looking for? You: Sorry - are the dongles different? I'd be a very occasional user so pay as you go seems about right - most places I stay have free wifi but it woul dbe very useful. Amy: yes you're right then the pay as you go option would suit you better So I'm off to Span in a few days with kit that won't work: with a top-up this has cost me £60. I need to be connected for work. To set the (useless?) dongle up this morning took 2+ hours - now you tell me what you sold me won't work!!! To say I'm dissatisfaied does not cover this!!!!! Would someone please call me tomorrow to discuss asap. - Plse txt me & i'll call you back - (removed mobile number) gaz2

Hi gaz2,

All USB dongles can be used abroad but at an additional cost to your inclusive allowance in the UK.

Using data services whilst roaming can be quite cost intensive, it just depends on what you are using your laptop for whilst you are abroad. Say for example, if you are just sending/receiving emails, bit of internet usage then the charges will be reasonably minor but if you are streaming or downloading content then this would be data intensive and cause a 'Boom' in charges and take your credit much much quicker. You can use a PAYG dongle abroad so long as roaming is enabled.

In all honesty, you should of been advised this at the point of sale and because this isn't the case then please accept my apologies.

As requested, I have sent an email to your registered address so we can discuss which option to take next as I feel this can't be rectified directly on the eForum without contact.

Once we have your reply, we will be in touch.

Kind regards

Andrew
