Hi BluePaw,
From the description of your problem, I'd say this issue is most likely coverage-related.
If you get less than 3 bars of signal on 3G, this is not considered to be enough signal to maintain a stable connection, and puts you at risk of dropping down to 2G. What can sometimes happen is that the act of you connecting to the 3G site causes it to "breathe" to maintain stability. Cell site breathing is where a site will actively "shrink" or "expand" its coverage, to ensure that everone currently connected to it gets the best possible connection and the site is not overloaded.
When you connect and the cell breathes, the coverage may shrink so that you are no longer within coverage - this will cause your connection to drop down to GPRS. When the 3G site then senses your disconnection, it breathes out again, putting you back in coverage. Your modem detects the superior 3G signal and attempts to switch up again. The process then repeats itself in a sort of ping-pong fashion back and forth until the modem loses its connection entirely during the hand-off.
Luckily this issue will only ever affect you in areas where your 3G signal strength is less than 3 bars, and can be overcome by creating a custom connection in "Manage Connections" which is set to connect to Vodafone UK 2G Only. While you will not get broadband speeds on a 2G connection, it will at the very least ensure that your connection is stable and will not cut you off in your prime
