I've recently bought an unlocked phone from a friend(htc m8) and got it and it works wonders.
The only problem is I don't have mobile data on it. I've recieved the, we'll be sending you mobile settings etc etc notification and I still haven't recieved one yet. Went instore and they said my simcard slot was dusty. I don't believe that.
I tried setting my mobile data manually by configuring my apn settings but it doesn't work, tried 4-5 different settings deleting and reusing and restarting my phone every update i have but to no avail.
What should I do?

Just to confirm that Mobile Data is turned on in the phones settings ?
When inputting the APN settings manually please make sure the ones for Payg or pay monthly are right as they are specific.
Usually texting WEB to 40127 brings the APN settings.
I use the ones from GeekSquad
Tap the Menu button
Tap Settings
Tap Wireless and networks or More... (depending on your version of Android)
Tap Mobile Networks
Tap Access point names
Tap the Menu button
Tap New APN
Enter the following data into the onscreen form, without changing any other settings;
Name - Vodafone Internet
APN - internet (PAYG - pp.vodafone.co.uk)
Username - web (PAYG - wap)
Password - web (PAYG - wap)
MMSC - http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy - 212.183.137.12
MMS Port - 8799
Authentication type - PAP
APN type - If given a choice, select internet+mms, if the keyboard appears enter *
(As a check, the image below shows blue text in the fields you should have completed)
Tap the Menu button
Tap Save
Enable the newly-added APN by ensuring the line is ticked, or the radio button is lit by tapping on it
Check the notification bar for 4G, H, 3G, E or G with up and down arro
Although for the M8s this may help

Tried this one from geeksquads and it doesn't work. I use monthly on mine so yeah. I'll probably just can this sim and get another one. Dusty sim slot, nice one.

I have had issues where the SIM card contacts needed to be cleaned, so it's not impossible. The text implies you're looking for something else incoming, but the settings tend to arrive silently these days. If you go into the main Settings menu, then Mobile Data and More, there should be an option for "get settings from provider" if the phone doesn't think it has them. You can also prompt an automatic request by removing and replacing the SIM. As AnnS says, have a look at Access Points and see if Vodafone Contract WAP is there and set as the default.

If you have an unlocked phone, you should only need to go to the network settings on your phone, more, mobile networks, access point names. If you are on contract, you need to make sure contract WAP is ticked.
