Moving the Sure Signal away from the router

As I've begun to use my phone more and more in the house I've come to the conclusion that unless I'm in the same room as the Sure Signal (and don't move from it) then I can't rely on the connection.

Currently my Sure Signal is near to my router, on the ground floor and I'm making phone calls two floors away in the attic. Ideally I'd want my Sure Signal in the room next to me, but I can't move the router so the only other option is to run a cable through the whole house. That's expensive and impractical.

What are my options? Is there some sort of wireless SureSignal thing? Or a way of linking it or broadcasting the signal to upstairs?

 Hi Andy,

As promised, I have now set up the SS in my loft to my router on the ground floor and it works perfectly ......

My house layout is a standard 2 story house and a loft.

I only have 1 ring main which is connecting to the router and 1 powerline adaptor on the ground floor.

The loft supply is a single cabled 16 Amp supply which goes directly back to the fuseboard and is supplying the Sure Signal and the other powerline.

This set up is the same as you require, so I can see no reason why it shouldn't work for you. :smileyhappy:

Regards,

Mike.

Hi Andy,

You could try using a pair of power line adaptors which transmit the ethernet signal through the power ring main  in your house.

They have been successfully used by some users on this forum.

There are quite a few different makes and versions, but any type should work, but it is down to trial and error really.

But remember that it can't be supported by Vodafone.

Good luck,

Mike.

Hi Andy,

UPDATE

As I had a pair of power lines, I thought I would give them a try and connect my V1 Sure Signal through them from my shed at the bottom of the garden to my router indoors.

The result was just excellent, it was just plug and play and my mobile worked perfectly.

The power lines I used were TP- Link AV200 nano. But I think they are now obsolete, a good alternative is now the TP-Link AV500 nano and cost around £25 for the pair.

Regards.

Mike.

Thanks guys. I didn't even know that these things existed.

I just checked my fusebox and the downstairs sockets and the attic sockets (where I have signal issues) are on a different fuse. Do you know if this means it won't work?

Hi Andy,

This is where the trial and error comes in, but there isn't any reason why it shouldn't work.

Other problems could be if your house is on a 3 phase supply (unlikely unless it's a large house) or there are surge filters or similar fitted somewhere.

Here are a couple of interesting threads on the subject..........

I have a separately fused socket in my loft, just give me a couple of hours and I will try it for you.

Mike,

Thanks so much for taking the time to do that, and for all the links you have provided.

I think I will take the plunge and by one of these powerline products.

Hi all,

I can confirm that this did work for me. Even the set up of the TP-Link equipment was easy. Having the two devices on different parts of my housing circuit apparently is not an issue.

I now have the SureSignal in my attic and it appears to be connecting to my mobile as it did before, when it was directly connected to the router.

Thanks for everyone's help. I hope others reading this thread in the future find it useful.
