Hi Freelancer IV

Thought that was the case with the firewall. I assumed that if I disabled the DHCP on the router that the ISP provided the DHCP, but maybe not. Not sure where to go with this. Do I need an IP range or port to enable?

The £50 flashing red light unit is starting to get annoying - Christmas lights are cheaper!

MrBones,

Your ISP assigns an external address to your router, but not to devices on your own network. When configured in the assumed manner (i.e. with the DHCP service operating on your router), IP addresses are assigned privately by the DHCP service running on your router to devices on tyour own network. Those devices may include however many PCs you have, perhaps networked printer(s) & scanner(s) and, most definitely in our case, the Sure Signal box.

Without an IP address, the Sure Signal can't operate. The Sure Signal can only acquire an IP address from a DHCP server.

When connecting to sites and servers located on/across the Internet, the private IP addresses held by your local devices are "translated" by your router so that connections to web sites & so on appear to emanate from your router. Your router takes care of managing  these connections and makes sure that they relate to the originating devices on your network.

This process is known as Network Address Translation (NAT).

As for ports, rather than open/forward these individually, it's easier to find out the IP address that's been acquired by your Sure Signal device and place that address in the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone). Most domestic routers support this feature, and dooing this requires just a single configuration action rather than an action for each port you need to deal with.

Devices situated in the DMZ are effectively on the "outboard" side of the firewall, and so can be communicated with from the Internet through any addressable port. While this leaves the Sure Signal without firewall protection, we don't need to care about it because it doesn't communicate with any of our own devices that we want to protect.

HTH,

Peter

Peter

Thanks again. Handy advice.

Have (I think) added the sure signals IP to the DMZ (192.168.0.3).

NAT is enabled and I've set it to open rather than secured.

3 Hours and still no joy!

Hi MrBones,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Your traceroute looks fine and your IP address isn’t blocked.

I’ve resynced your Sure Signal today, please can you complete this process by performing a factory reset as follows:

  • Hold the reset button till all the lights come on or flash (about 30 seconds)
  • Keeping the rest button held, remove and re-insert the power lead
  • Once all the lights come on or flash, release the reset button
  • The VSS should come online within the hour

Let me know how you get on.

Many thanks,

Jenny

Hi Jenny

Thanks for your help but still the same. This is the V3 so there is no power lead, however, I still did what you asked and no change.

Vodafone have been on the phone today and are sending me a replacement unit. Could you just outline the procedure for unregistering my current one and registering the new one.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi MrBones,

Thanks for getting back to me.

To unregister your Sure Signal you just need to log into your online account here and select ‘Manage Sure Signal’. From there simply select ‘deregister’ :Smiling:

Cheers,

Jenny

New unit arrived a few days ago. Registered the new one and plugged it in. Still nothing but a flashing red light and a solid service light again.

My IP address has changed to 91.125.67.202 so would be greatful if that could be added to the white list.

The following ports are open on my netgear router 8,50,123,500,4500,1723

My ISP - Plusnet is not blocking anything - Checked with them.

My upload and download speeds are fine.

Hi MrBones,

Thanks for your post here.

I can see that the new IP address is not on the whitelist which is causing the issues that you are seeing.

I have requested for this to be updated for you which will be completed within the next 72 hours.
