No Device Found With Vista 64

Not applicable
I have just bought a new HP Pavilion laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. When I insert my Huawei E870 ExpressCard the VMC software will not detect it. The card still works in my old laptop (Vista Home Premium 32 bit)

I checked in the device manager USB devices and when I insert the card, it flashes a few times but it never shows a USB Mass Storage Device. I have tried both the latest version of VMC (9.4) and also the last version (9.3). I am guessing that because the laptop doesn't detect the card I won't get anywhere until that is sorted.

Can you help?

Hi Dave,

One last shot from me - can you give the following a try?

Open an elevated Command Prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. Type the following command and press ENTER.

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Reboot, and re-attempt the installation. Let me know if there's any change :)

Hi Jon

I tried what you suggested but it made no difference. What I have done since is to completely remove/uninstall everything Vodafone on the laptop. I even went through the registry deleting all the vodafone and VMC settings.

Then I re-installed VMC 9.4 and rebooted. This time when I insert the express card, I see the USB taskbar icon allowing me to stop the device. This wasn't there before. This shows up as the Vodafone Mobile Broadband Modem (Huawei) #2. When I run VMC, and open the Manage Devices, the Modem shows up in the devices list. It is set as default but the Active status is not lit. When I add a new device it still doesn't find the express card. There are now no lights on the card. Also, when I try to Connect To the modem (Dial up Connection), Vista tells me it failed to connect.

If you can't think of anthing else to try, what should I do next? I am paying for a contract that I can't use.

Dave

One further thing. Now when I start VMC and then insert the card, it searches for devices and then says "Mobile Device Detected" but doesn't get any further.

Hi Monkeynager,

This certainly is proving to be a difficult issue. I've seen the "mobile device detected" issue before and was able to resolve it each time by fully closing the VMC software (File > Close) and then reloading, I'd give this a try, however I'm not too hopeful that will fix it.

Assuming it doesn't then there will be something on the laptop that is causing the problem. My best suggestion would be to apply a "clean boot" to your system, this will help identify if it is a program on the PC causing the issue and if so which one. This can be done as follows:

To Apply “Clean Boot” on Windows XP:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. In the Run window, type following text:

msconfig

3. Click OK.

The System Configuration Utility appears.

4. Click the General tab.

Click on Selective Startup and make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked.

(You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).

5. Click the Services tab.

6. Select Hide all Microsoft Services.

Warning Do not skip this step. You must hide the Microsoft Services before you go on to step 7.

7. Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab.

8. Click Apply > OK.

9. Click Restart.

To Apply "Clean Boot" on Windows Vista:

1. Click Start Menu, and type msconfig in the search bar.

2. Hit return (or double left click) on returned Msconfig file to launch System Configuration utility.

The System Configuration Utility appears.

3. Ensure the General tab is selected.

If error is cleared then indicates a conflict with another service or application running on the machine. This will require enabling each service/application one by one and retesting to find the service/application at fault.

Note When you have completed your troubleshooting, follow the steps in the next section to configure Windows to perform a Normal startup.

To Reverse Clean Boot:

Restore your computer to its original settings

1. Rerun MSConfig utility as detailed above

2. On the general tab click Normal Startup.

3. Click OK.

4. Click Restart.

See how you get on with the above.

Hi George

I tried what you suggested and still no difference apart from now when I start VMC and insert the card, the Mobile Device Detected meesage only appears for about 1 sec before it says No Device. To me this sounds like a power supply issue now that we have eliminated driver conflicts.

I said in an earlier post that the card was consuming all of the 500mA available on the USB port. If the card requires more power than the port can supply, the voltage will drop which might explain why it is only detected for a second or so. Gave you come across this as an issue before?

Hi Dave,

As a matter of fact, I have - but never with an express card.

Our early USB Modems came with double-headed USB ports so that extra power could be supplied to the device should the laptop's power supply prove insufficient. Obviously we can't really do that with a PC Express card. I think you're right in your diagnosis however, so the next step would probably be to check in with your laptop support to see if there's a reason insufficient power is being supplied.
