A massive warm welcome from all of us here at the eForum, it's always a pleasure to have new faces around.
I've had a quick look at the coverage in your area and it does seem as though you are just on the outskirts of the strongest 3G coverage, which could be why it's only able to pick up GPRS coverage even outside.
Can you try it another area, or even put the SIM card from the modem into a phone to check the connection? If it's the modem that's casuing the problem, the store will be more than happy to get a replacement one for you.
