Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 5.1.1 update

Hi,

Will Vodafone have to check the 5.1.1 update for the S6 Edge before it is rolled out or does it come directly from Samsung?

Typically Vodafone will hold the firmware back to check its compatibility with its network and any features the new firmware may introduce which may cause conflict.

It is for branded handsets usually.

If a phone is Un branded then an update can be downloaded at the owners discretion.

That said I always as visits best to sit on any update to check from blogs if users are having any teething issues / bugs with it.

The update itself is rolled out by Samsung but Vodafone will test it and add various bits of customisation to it prior to it being rolled out.

I just got the update OTA. My phone was bought from Samsung not Vodafone but I am running on the Vodafone network. I will post in a few days to let everyone know how the update went.

Initial report. One the face of it not alot has changed. All the basics are still working well. I can confirm that I can make calls and send texts without any tweaking from Vodafone, so let's hope they can get this update out quickly.

The camera app has received a couple of minor enhancements, eg. you can fix focus/exposure by tapping on something and then adjust the exposure up/down manually using a slider. Nice addition for the occasional case where the auto mode gets it wrong.

I will report back later in the week with an impression over whether battery life has changed. Others may differ, but for me the battery life being only average (before the update) was my only (minor) gripe. Other than that this phone has exceeded my expectations in every way.

5.1.1 is indeed rolling out for XEU devices only.  Currently, no UK network has the 5.1.1 update. 

For XEU devices, the Baseband version is G925FXXU2BOFJ.  For those of you who own non branded devices, please make sure you have backed everything up before updating your device. 

It is quite a large update, so it may be an idea to install it on your phone using SmartSwitch and connecting the handset to your computer using the cable - this way you can recover the device in the unlikely event something goes wrong.

Ok just over a day in and I can say that it is stable, but hasn't made a very noticeable difference to anything. The headline is that you are not missing much so don't feel impatient to get your hands on it.

Battery life so far is very similar to 5.0.2. Possibly slightly better in periods where I am not using the phone at all. For my usage pattern I get about 10-14 hours between charges (usually with 2-4 hours of screen time). I am office bound so this is fine for me because I can easily top up a couple of times during the day, but I would love to get this up to 14-18 hours then it really would be an all day phone without worry.
