Hi
I have recently upgraded to the S4 (GT-I9505, Android 4.2.2). My issue relates to connecting to the internet via the mobile network. When I connect to the internet via wi-fi, there is no problem. However, if I turn wi-fi off, and try to use the mobile internet, I find that I am unable to. I am in a strong signal area, and other users with different handsets can connect to the (vf) network; however, my device will not. A workaround that I have found is to try and register the phone on another network, which it will fail to do as is it a vf phone. I then re-register the phone back on to the vf network, which then gives me mobile internet connectivity. However, this proves to be a temporary solution, as any period of inactivity means having to do the whole process again. Toggling between flight mode does not work. I have also tried to wipe the cache memory in recovery start-up, however this produces the word 'error' and simply reboots, with no improvement to the connection status.
I would be interested to know if there are others experiencing this issue, and more importantly, what I can do to resolve this; having to register the phone onto the network every time I want to use mobile internet is definitely not the way forward!
Regards
Gareth

Hi Gareth
The first thing to do is check out the Network trouble shoot Template.
Post it back here and one of the Team will be able to pick up the issue and help you out.

Hi there. I got my S4 at the start of September and had given up on ever getting internet via data when I was out and about. At my home I have only a rather flaky 2G signal and I always kept the phone on GSM only as any other setting just flattened the battery in a few hours. If I was lucky enough to grab some E data then things improved a little but still nothing like my old S2. My last month of data I used only 17mb so I was in no danger of hitting my allowance cap!
Well...along came the 4.3 update and things are much much better. Must have a different radio on there but I now have internet via my data plan even in areas with only 2G. So check your phone to see if the update is ready to download (I did mine via Kies).

There is an isue at the moment which relates to switching between 4G and 3G/2G. I believe it's something Samsung are aware of and will fix in firmware.
In the meantime, try turning off 4G (LTE) in Settings|Networks. That will restrict you to 3G and below and seems to be the effective workround. This will nto affect normal operation unless you're in London and can actually receive 4G.

I have the same issue, mobile internet doesn't work on S4 for 70% of the time and its quite annoying because I am basically paying for a service I am not getting. Vodafone have tried different settings, changed SIM but issue is still unresolved. I think its an issue with S4 switching between 4G and 3G/2G as mentioned below. Either way I feel short changed by Vodafone as I am paying for a service I can hardly use.

To be fair to Vodafone, it's a Samsung firmware issue over which they have no control.

Hi all, sorry for not responding sooner, and thanks to those that did post. Since my OP, I have updated to Android 4.3, which does seem to have improved the data connectivity; I am not having to select another carrier, and then selct vf, in order to access the internet! I still have to occasionally do this, but not nearly as much as I had to do whilst on Android 4.2.2. I will keep updated as to the performance; again, thanks to those that offered advice.

To start with, I'd try looking in to a Vodafone shop and see if they can sort the issue for you. On the face of it, it should be relatively simple as the device should work out of the box. The issue with slow internet could simply be a network one - if you're in a 2G area and/or the network is congested, it'll be like that. There can also be connection issues when you're on the border between a 3G and a 2G cell. If it's not that, it's possible that the settings need tweaking, though they should be correct from the start.
If the Vodafone shop can't help (technical expertise of staff varies) or there isn't one near you, I believe Carphone Warehouse are very good too.
