Now working.

I switched the Aitport Extreme for another router which gives greater control over VPN raffic and explicitly allows IPSEC traffic - TP-LINK WR841.

Too a few hours to connect but now have white lights.

So it appears that using PPPOE connection on a Airport Extreme will not work but if you us Airport Extreme to connect to another modem which has an explicit IP addess (unlike the Openreach set up) then it will work.

Hope that helps someone.

Which model of BT Homehub are you using?

No homehub.... I have a BT supplied Openreach VDSL fibre modem - the ECI model and not the Huawei

That may be the problem.  When I moved to Infinity plus, I had a BT Home Hub 3, which was fine with SS1.  The software running on the latter proved to be incompatible with SS3.  Subsequently, after much research, I found that BT HomeHub 5 was supposed to be fully compatible with SS3.  This has proved to be the case.  When my Infinity plus was installed, the modem you mention was not an option, or was not offered.

I think the set up with Infinity is an all in one solution with modem and router in one box.

I am not with BT as my internet provider however the last mile is owned and maintianed by BT up to and including a VDSL modem.  They use the software on the modem to check line characteristics etc as far as I can tell from what is written on the internet.

You can replace this modem with something else but then BT will not provide support.....

So that will be why you were not offered the modem.
