Usb Modem With Ubunto Os

Not applicable
I have a new Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with the Ubunto OS. I visited a store in Edinburgh where the staff was kind enough to let me try a TopUp and Go USB Modem Stick before purchasing. When inserted in the USB port the device was recognized, a screen for configuration opened and then the stick got a blue light which I understand indicates its working. However, the connection icon on the Mini continued to rotate without establishing a connection. When the cursor was scrolled over the icon, a window popped up stating it was dialing. I opened the browser but received a message stating I was not connected.

Is there a way to make this work? This is my first netbook with an OS other than Windows.

Thanks.

I would suggest that you head on over to Betavine, and download Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux - you should be able to follow the guide for the Dell Mini 10, and have it up and running in no time at all.

A flashing blue light indicates that you have 3G coverage (light blue = HDSPA) - it doesn't mean anything in terms of correct settings etc. However, a solid blue light means that you have established a connection.

I can't see why it shouldn't work, but then I've just given Ubuntu 9.10 one last shot on my eeepc900 before
reinstalling an earlier version. Latest update did fix the problem with my K3520 not connecting since
previous update and before that it had been working..broken..working..broken from 8..04 through 9.10.

What version of Ubuntu and when was last update? What model of modem?

What are your settings in Network Manager?

you might also be better asking for help on a Ubuntu forum.

(It worked straight out of the box for me in Mint 7, but, I don't know whether it shares a common version of NetworkManager with Ubuntu 9.10 - my guess is that it's an earlier version.)

Thanks for the quick recommendations. Have been attempting to go to the betadine site but can't seem to connect at this time. Will try again tomorrow then get back to you.

Again, thanks.

The guidance here is for the Mini 9, but, I would suspect that the pacakges should work fine.

(Just checked, and it's working fine for me, currently)

Neil,

Was able to access Betavine this morning and it was very easy to install. Will now head to the Vodafone store to get a stick and see if it works. I really appreciate your easy to understand guidance and will post another reply to let you know the results.

David,

I checked the Dell software disk and it shows Ubunto 8.04 LTS. Clicking About Ubunto on the mini also shows 8.04. Update Manager shows the system is up to date. If you have other recommendations, please let me know.

Thanks all!

Excellent - feel free to either post back here, or else on Betavine - either way, we'll try to help!

I wasn't able to get VMC to install correctly on 8.04 and never tried on later versions because the default
"Network Manager" on 8.04 worked with my K3520 straight away.

I had no further problems until after upgrade to 8.10 when after a later update to that, "Network Manager"
began causing similar problems as on Windows, with device already in use messages etc.

After that I setup a manual pppd connection and that worked through upgrades and updates to 9.04 then
to 9.10 when last but one update to that (500MB over mobile broadband at about 150kB/s) on reboot it
had zapped ability to connect anywhere by either pppd connection or ethernet lan 😞

Fixed that by manual ethernet configuration and further update last weekend after which I'm able to use
"Network Manager" again without problem.

It all seems very fragile.
