I have been using the dongle on my dell laptop with no problems but the USB port has broke and stopped working. I bought a PCMCIA 2 port USB buscard but the dongle will not install correctly, it seems to install and then uninstall - how I can make it work so I can connect?

Hello holsten

Welcome to the eForum, im confident we can help :)

this isn't your everyday query but we're here to help either way, by 'broken' i assume you mean a device fault as opposed to the port actually physically broken?

If you can clarify what operating system (Windows vista, Mac, XP) you're using we might be able to gain a better understanding. In terms of the dongle you're using may i suggest you download alternative modem software i.e VMC 9.3.6, this can be downloaded from the Vodafone business Website, which may prove tricky if you don'e have an internet connection, :(

The only additional suggestion i can make is to re-install the USB buscard, in turn we (Mods) are limited as to the advice we can give around 'configurin' your personal computer/laptop, :)

Thanks

Hi

The USB port is actually "broken" - as in physically not attached to the motherboard anymore - I have taped it up to avoid it causing more damage.

I have a Dell Latitude with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. The Dongle is K3565.

I have downloaded the software and installed it, but stil not working.

I think the problem is caused by the PCI card - I dont think it is letting the modem of the dongle to be installed as there is a problem in device manager with the PCI Modem. As I cannot connect to the internet directly through the laptop it is causing problems getting the correct driver. I have uninstalled and re-installed the PCI Card but the PCI Modem drivers can not be found.

If anyone can help and let me know if this is likely to be the problem and how would be the best way of sorting it out.

Many thanks

I think your diagnosis is right. Unfortunately I don't have any "bright ideas" on how to fix it :(
Since the USB modem is not designed to be used in a PCMCIA slot, there is no real way to tell how it will react.

I'm afraid your only real option would be to get the USB port on your laptop repaired.

You said this devise is not designed to work through a PCMCAI card, but it looks as though others are using theirs through this port. On further testing, it now looks as if everything does actually install correctly, the modem does install as a modem and the device connects to a COM port, but the computer can not open a connection, it finds the devise OK, but can not connect to remote computer. If anyone has any suggestions I can try it would be appreciated as to mend the USB port on the computer will involve a new motherboard and the costs involved are too much for the laptop and I dont really want to buy new computer.

I await any help anyone can give.

Hi Holsten (brings back memories of my beloved Spurs in the 80s that username... B-) )

I can appreciate the need to explore all the options before looking at a major outlay like that, and I'm happy to try everything we can to identify the root of the issue. At the same time, I'd also throw things open to anyone else who has been using the PCMCIA port with their modem to see if they do have any experience with the issue.

If the software is installing, then getting a better idea of what is happening when it runs is the best way we can make progress here for you. Can you confirm exactly what you do when you try to get a connection for me, step by step, and what happens at each stage - does the system hang, is there a specific error message, and what happens when it fails?

You may also want to check that your computer isn't misidentifying the device when it finds it. If you check the sandbox by the clock on your system toolbar, can you check for any icon referring to the Modem being used as a Mass Storage device for me? If there is one, it means that something is using the device and therefore it won't operate as a modem, so you need to dicsconnect that application from the device to free it up.

I'm confident that we can make sure that everything not requiring a new USB port is covered for you, just pop back wirth the added information for me!
