Vodafone K3565 Dongle - I Get A 'Type Initializer' Error When Trying To Launch VMC

AdrianST
Not applicable
I'm trying to install a Pay-as-you-Go Vodafone 3G Modem onto my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro A120, Intel Dual Core, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium). The modem was purchased about 12 months ago. It seems to install the driver software Ok and is shown in Device Manager as ‘This device is working properly’.

Using Device Manager to query the modem reveals :

Manufacturer: huawei

Model: K3565

Revision: 11.608.10.51.00

I've installed the VMC application supplied on the modem’s internal storage. I’ve also tried downloading the latest VMC setup application (9.4.6.20529). Both applications appear to install correctly (installed under an administrator ID).

When I try to launch either the original or the new version of the VMC application, I get the same error message (I launched the application, got the error, then uninstalled the old version, did a registry clean and rebooted before installing the new 9.4.6.20569 version).

The error message occurring with both versions starts as follows :-

The type initializer for ’VMC.UI.CommonDialogs.DisplayMessages’ threw an exception. System.ArgumentException: Font ‘Tahoma’ does not support style ‘Regular’.

(There’s much more – the full text is shown in the attached screen capture .jpg image)

The modem used to work fine under both XP or Windows Vista using the original VMC application – is this Windows 7 specific issue with the VMC software ?

Any advice gratefully received

Hi AdrianST,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum Family, it's always great to see new faces on here :).

For some reason, your post appears to have appeared in a strange format so I may not be reading it correctly, if I'm not, would you be able to post it again?

From the sounds of it though, there does appear to be some sort of conflict with the VMC software. The good news is that the VMC software isn't actually needed to connect to the internet as long as your modem is picking up a network. You'll know if it's picking up a network because the light will be flashing blue or green once every second or so.

If you are picking up a network then I'd recommend using the following steps to connect via a manual dial-up connection:

-Go To Start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options
-Click Modems and then highlight the Huwaei Modem
-Click Properties and then Change Settings
-Click the Advanced tab and type the following into the Extra Initialisation Command field: at+cgdcont=1,"IP","pp.internet" and press OK
-Close Phone and Modem Options and then go to Network and Sharing Centre
-Create a new dial-up internet connection with the following settings:
-Phone number:*99#
-Username:web
-Password:web
-Connection Name:Vodafone Prepay
-This can then be accessed by going to Start > Connect To

Let me know how you get on :).
