Vodafone default from 2012

Hi there

after trying to get a new credit card and being refused I have now seen that I have a Vodafone default for £63 from 2012 that is stopping me from getting credit. As far as I was concerned the balance had been paid and this should not be applicable. Please can someone advise how I can get this default removed as it's so unfair!!
