Vodafone quoting me £600 to pay off my existing contract to enable me to order an iPhone x

I want to be able to pre-order the iPhone x this coming Friday but Vodafone have quoted me £600 to pay off my exisitng contract and to then allow me to set up a new contract for the iPhone X.

I just can't afford to pay that amount of money if I then have to pay up to £150 to get the iPhone X. I want to stay with Vodafone and have been a customer for quite a few years now.

Is there anything that cn be done?

Hi @adavies199 afraid probably not as you will have to clear your old contract first, the figure quoted will be the early termination fee.

You used to be able to add quite a few months of an existing contract to the new one but that has been stopped by the regulator.

It's especially difficult to get any sort of deals on new iPhones too.

Hi @adavies199

If you wait until the phone has been released, you may qualify for a flexi upgrade.  If you meet the criteria, there is further information for you below.

What’s a Flexi-upgrade and how do I get one?

If you do not meet the flexi upgrade criteria and want to upgrade whilst still in commitment, it will mean having to pay up your current contract to leave you free to take out a contract for the new iphone.

The other alternative to paying early termination charges, if to buy the phone outright, carry on using your present contract and change to SIM only when the contract finishes the mininum term.  Appreciate this will be a large outlay and something you may not be able to afford but will work out cheaper in the long run.

The other significant obstacle is getting hold of one of the iPhone 10 models.

The demand will almost certainly outstrip supply especially with the reported delays in manufacturing them.

My advice is to wait until it’s been released and used by real owners and watch and read reviews and have a go with working demo models before investing funds in trying to acquire one.

By that time if you still want one then at least you know the funds you’ll need to part with to upgrade to one or buy one outright from Apple - prices being what they are dependant on ehich Gb Storage is opted for.

Either way it’s going to be an expensive purchase.

Mobile phone contracts are for a fixed period, often two years.  If you decide to chop and change halfway (or less) through your contract it's going to cost you a lot of money, even if you have a flexible upgrade contract where you only have to pay off your existing handset.

In any case the iPhone X doesn't do anything a Galaxy S8 won't do for less money.......
