Solution

"Vodafone Connect and Media server issues

Hi

I have recently connected to Vodafone broadband and I am using the Vodafone Connect router. So far I am impressed with the speed and quality of the router, but I cannot see my media server on my Xbox 360 any more. The NAS I am using is the Seagate Goflex Home. I have not had any problems with previous routers and I am sure I am missing the obvious in the set up. Any help would be gratefully recieved. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

How are you connecting your GoFlex to the router?

Wifi or ethernet?

You may not be able to view your media server on your Xbox due to an IP change. You may need to amend your IP through the Xbox settings. If you need help with this, the Xbox support page will be able to assist.

If this doesn't work, please contact our specialist Vodafone Broadband Live Chat team, who'll be able to take a look at your account.

Hi,

My Goflex is connected via ethernet.

Thanks

Others are experiencing similar issues when connecting a device that uses a DLNA server to the router directly. I have posted a test in the below question, you could give it a go and let me know if it works. If it does then I might know the problem.

The other solution is to buy a switch. Connect your stuff to the switch then the switch to the Vodafone Connect Router. This works but doesn't explain why it isn't working.

If you try turning the Firewall off temporarily under Advanced then Firewall. When you change it to OFF remember to Apply the setting. Then see if it appears on the Xbox 360 now. Once you;ve tested it remember to turn the firewall straight back on.

Hi there,

Tried your suggestion with the firewall,  but sadly this didn't work. I have remembered to switch the firewall back on!

Cheers. Well that's really annoying.

The geek in me is now forcing me to change all my setup so I can do some testing myself. It's a strange problem since it works if you connect the device into a switch and not into the router.

I'll have a play and see what I can find.

The reply I put in the other thread is below. I did some testing with a Plex DLNA server connect into one port and a PC connected into the other. I was able to packet capture the source and destination and could see that the DLNA discovery packets hit the router but are not forwarded to the other device. When I introduce a seperate switch I can see the packets reach the Plex server and then see it respond. The problem is the routers firmware. Someone from the Tech Team needs to forward the issue to the product development guys.

Hi all.

For anyone else who finds this question this is what I have found. It is a bug and Vodafone need to resolve it in firmware.

The Vodafone Connect Router broadcasts on your network as a DLNA server called Vodafone Station. It seems to be called this because in other countries like Italy they use the same/similar router but call it a Vodafone Station.

When connecting a device that uses a DLNA server to send media to other devices like your TV, Amp or games console to the router directly it will not work. You may not be aware that your devices uses DLNA but it probably does just like the mentioned devices in this thread. Check your manufacturers details and look for the DLNA logo, if it's there then this is the problem.

Your TV, Amp and games console act as a DLNA client and scan the network for DLNA servers which they would normally pick up however the router is not passing the DLNA requests between the built in network ports. Instead it responds back with it's own DLNA server called Vodafone Station. The DLNA server it uses is called Twonky. There appears to be an option to disable this in the Vodafone Connect Router interface but disabling it does not actually turn it off. It remains on and discoverable. For those that have said they can still access the content from a PC the reason is that you're using a different method of connectivity, not DLNA. Most likely SMB.

The permenant solution is for Vodafone to fix this in a firmware upgrade.

The temporary fix as mentioned by others is to buy a cheap switch, you can pick them up for £10 or less. Connect the switch to the Vodafone Connect Router then connect all your devices to switch instead. If your TV uses wifi and isn't cabled to the switch you may find this still doesn't work.

I found no settings tinkering works for this problem. This is a consumer grade product so most users expect to be able to plug and play without the need for any knowledge of how it actually works. You buy these devices and plug them in and they should work, you shouldn't need to know how DLNA works etc... In this case the bug isn't acceptable and should be fixed.

The tech team needs to flag this with the product development guys.

Thanks for the investigative work you've done.

We'll pass this information on to the team so they can investigate this further.

Trying to use switches with this Connect router can prove problematic due to not being able to switch off IGMP snooping.
