Left phone connected to copper after fibre install?

My elderly parents have just switched to the Full Fibre 1 package, and had an Openreach engineer out this afternoon to install the fibre line into the house. The engineer fitted the ONT box, set up the new router, and updated their laptop with the new wifi password, and the Internet side of things is working fine.

However the engineer has left the phone connected to the old BT wall socket (copper), which still works as my dad called me on it a few minutes ago. He's not tech savvy so didn't think to query why the engineer didn't plug the phone into the new router, as I'd have expected.

The order included keeping the landline and existing number, but it concerns me that someone has made a mistake given how the phone has been left. Any thoughts?

I did start wondering whether they now have to wait for the landline/number to be switched over, at which point someone will be in touch telling them to plug the phone into the router? But strange that nothing like this has been communicated.

My dad said the "phone" light is lit on the router, but he's so bad with tech that I didn't want to push my luck by asking him to plug the phone into the router to see if there is a dial tone (and if so what number). I will try this when I visit at the weekend...

If the phone LED is lit on the router, it would appear the VoIP service has been provisioned.

Do let us know what you find when you visit, I've a felling it may have a new number. (but even if it does, I would expect the PSTN service to have been terminated)

Were they previously with Vodafone on FTTC?

@Jayach no they were previously with Plusnet for landline and fttc broadband.

Check with PlusNet that the previous account has been cancelled, but I have a horrible feeling that the transfer didn't work, and they now have two accounts.,

There is no automatic transfer from an FTTC account to an FTTP account, It is up to the customer to ensure the previous account has been cancelled.

I hope I'm wrong, but best to check. Ofcom only regulate FTTC to FTTC transfers.

The phone via the old BT socket stopped working the next day, and my dad rang me in a panic. I was assuming the worst, and that they weren't going to get a landline at all (or at best lose their existing number).

I managed to talk him into connecting the phone into the back of the router, and lo and behold it's working, and with their existing number. Panic over!

Glad to hear it all worked out, for once I'm pleased I was wrong.
