Back to playing the routing game.

Very funny vodafone. Close the relevant thread then put me back on the Edinburgh gateway - and my connection was reset to do this. Really really funny. To say I'm pee'd off is an understatement. I should not be getting a better internet connection by tethering with my phone (4G). I'm running a trace now for 24hrs which I'll paste here tomorrow night.

I shouldn't have to connect to a French VPN to get a decent connection to UK servers. And so the saga resumes, part deux............

Further digging. To get my geolocation fixed I have to deal with IP2Location directly (they're Malaysian apparently).

I'm thinking I'm going to hit a brick wall there so in the interest of my own mental health I'm going to ask VF for a dynamic IP, when they eventually fix TOBI 😔

Question. If i was to go back to dynamic would I be given another Aberdeen IP given that was the last place I was geolocated to?

The various IP geolocation databases certainly don't agree. There doesn't a definitive database.

If only they did have their own system, but that would cost more.

Maxmind more acurately geolocates me to Milton Keynes - which is where the IP is registered. There was another that I can't remember right now, but it's in my browser history, and that agreed with Milton Keynes.

Only IP2Location (Vodafone's choice) has me in Aberdeen.

I've cancelled the static IP. My account didn't even show that I had one. It's only after searching my IP that the agant could see it. He's had to do an order "to add in system" and he'll cancel it when it shows active (we'll see about that).

While I was there I've upgraded to Full Fibre 200, for £4 a month less than I'm paying now. That gets me a fresh 14 day option to cancel without penalty. Will see how that goes.

Maxmind proves to be reliable in the tests I've done.

Maxmind is used by vf. I forget which the other is but have it written down somewhere. VF are very cagey about  saying which ones they use.  The time the databases take to update vary from immediate to a month if you submit a manual correction.

Your problem is that it's the sites you connect to that use the different Geo-Location service databases.  You cannot guarantee which service those sites are going to use!

Agreed. That's why I go exclusively directly to Maxmind. I've run test after test. I used to use their api on a couple of websites and it never missed a beat. I'll never use any of the more popular sites that just combine a few results and pick any result that shows any corellation.

I wouldn’t waste your time. I went through all the databases and corrected my location. An ip  check on any site now shows the correct location but it made zero difference to routing

Just a wee update (yeah, a funny).

Vodafone use their database,

Not disagreeing, as I have no idea, but it seems strange to use a 3rd party database to work out where their subscribers are?

Surely they would get it from our address records on their system

My troubles are essentially over. Whether it was the old Superfast 100 service or the static IP we'll likely never know. At around 2am this morning both my full fibre 200 and dynamic IP were activated, and it shows. I may still be on the Edinburgh gateway but I have steady speed now. I won't be able to test gaming performance until later.
