Ping/Latency way higher Gigafast 900

I used to get 5ms ping to London (from Coventry), now I am being auto connected to Edinburugh and I get 15 ping to there, when I try to speedtest to London or even right next to me in Leicester I am getting pings above 22...I called in and they just said "they added new servers and there's nothing much we can do"...

any help?

@purrbox

I will continue to point out when you are wrong, but I will not enter into any more discussions, as Mark Twain said:

Quote by Mark Twain

if you are passionate about ownership of the network (I'm a nerd, I get it), you could start a new thread about the network and that would free up this one.

Apologies to those who are sick of this debate. I promise, it's over on my part. I won't make or respond to any more posts about who owns the network from here on.

I was with Vodafone 900 for 24 months. My latency during that time was between 8-9ms consistently. The latency issue is clearly a problem with Vodafone rather than Cityfibre as i have now switched to Giganet and my latency has dropped by 5-6ms which is huge:

C:\Users\jamie>tracert pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com

Tracing route to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

<1 ms <1 ms <1 ms pfSense.home.arpa [192.168.1.1]
3 ms 4 ms 4 ms thn-bn-4.giga.net.uk [37.48.224.44]
3 ms 3 ms 4 ms 217-168-248-82.m12solutions.net [217.168.248.82]
4 ms 3 ms 3 ms lonap-gw1.thdo.ncuk.net [5.57.80.142]
4 ms 4 ms 4 ms te1-51-36.core-rs3.thdo.ncuk.net [80.249.97.72]
4 ms 4 ms 4 ms po5-32.core-rs4.thdo.ncuk.net [80.249.97.90]
3 ms 4 ms 4 ms pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]

Just a thought, is there a way we can manually set our gateway? I did try putting my local BNG as the gateway into the config, but it still connected me to Edinburgh.

What about if we use another vodafone PPoe username and password? I have 4 other properties in the same area (each with their own accounts) and they are all routed correctly. If it's tied to the username, I could switch one of them over with mine as the other property isn't interested in gaming or low latency.

@purrbox why don't you just try change the  ppoe settings if it doesn't work then change back

Thank you @jalzoo, you have clearly proved what we have been saying all the time.

@purrbox why don't you start your own thread. This thread has been about Vodafone over both Cityfibre and Openreach since June - no matter how hard you try to derail it.

Can I ask what Cityfibre location you're in to get that latency @jalzoo, thanks.

I'm in Northampton.

@da1e85 I gave it a try, it did connect but unfortunately it's still via the Edinburgh gateway (80ms ping today). Maybe the routing is tied the mac address of the ONT box? The City Fibre engineer did say something about the cabinet on the street connecting to something else. I can't remember what terminology (head point / head end?) that was used but they did say that they load balanced it to relieve congestion. However, I will phone up Vodafone again and see if they can read through the notes and find out exactly what City Fibre said.

At least if we know more about how it's load balanced, we can use this to complain and hopefully get them to switch us back to our local BNG's. I do have trace routes from my other Vodafone connections and they are all routed by our local BNG's and have super low 6ms pings at peak time. I plan to use this to prove that there isn't a congestion issue as the other connections are all working great. I did ask vodafone if there's any way to "swap" my connections over and they said no.

We just need to keep at it. If we can build up enough evidence, eventually we can get them to listen. If any of your Neighbours are on City Fibre, run a trace route on their connection, if they are getting low pings that's more proof you can use.
