Got a question that might be UK specific but hopefully someone out there has tried/done the same.
I'm getting the 1Gbps Vodafone FTTP service installed on Thursdxender ay and wondered if it's possible to not use their supplied router (THG3000) which apparently has no modem/bridge mode but rather connect my pfSense (or OPNSense if easier) box straight into the new ONT and get pfSense to handle the PPoE authentication side of things?
We're all sorted wifi wise as well, with a UniFi setup, so omegle sticking yet another wifi setup into the mix doesn't hold much appeal either.
If I read the stuff on BT's own FTTP offering correctly, the only reason for not doing this is because it means losing the bundled digital (VOIP) voice line functionality. That's no problem for us, as our current voice line is and will continue to be provided by our Virginmedia cable connection which we're keeping for the foreseeable future and the new Vodafone connection is purely for WFH connectivity for me. My "office" line/extension is a SIP softphone anyway.
It might be useful to have that second voice line (but not at the cost of having to use the bundled all-in-one router) and I do actually have a couple of Grandstream ATA's knocking about so wonder if I could configure one of those to work with Vodafone's VOIP number?
Cheers!

There should be no problem not using the Vodafone router with FTTP.
You will need your PPPoE username and password, get those via live chat: https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/ and you may need the VLAN which will be 911 for CityFibre and 101 for Openreach. (but I think the Openreach ONT handles that)
You won't be able to use the Vodafone VoIP with another ATA as they don't give out the details.

As @Jayach has mentioned you should be able to use your own modem with relative ease. I don't believe we have a pfsense expert on these forums though (VF support would think pfsense is a sci-fi film).
I almost dare not say this, but you may be able to plug the VF router into your pfsense box and have the SIP/VOIP info forwarded to it. While most routers aren't capable of doing this, I believe the pfsense box should be capable - just don't ask me what the settings/forwarding rules will be!
