Solution

YouTube terrible speed and buffering

I am on Vodafone fibre so just under a year and no problems getting 10mbps but over the last 5 days I am getting terrible performance on YouTube on wifi on all devices. It either buffers, doesn’t play video and occasionally I get a period of a few minutes with no problems.

I have rebooted router and reset firmware and spoke to  Vodafone but no solution. If I connect to mobile data all is good, and all other streaming video sites work fantastic and my wifi speed is always good. Any ideas?

It is actually working ok for me today.

I am meant to be getting a call from a technician later to do some tests but as its working i don't think they will need to...

Just in terms of an update for those still uncertain, I have just had a quick phone call with Kate from the complaints team whom was once again fantastic.

I may be misremembering some of this but the gist was basically that there was some faulty equipment at an exchange which had been removed by a 3rd party for repairs and for whatever reason the Vodafone traffic was not being re-routed properly or fast enough and this also had something to do with how close you were to this particular exchange which would explain why a lot of us in a similar area were having difficulty.

Essentially though it sounds as if Vodafone have managed to identify the cause and liaise with whomever necessary to get it sorted again.

Fingers crossed it remains fixed!

@mmotti

That makes perfect sense, for exchange read datacentre and for 3rd party equipment read Google CDN (content delivery network).

Indeed it does make sense, although the bit that doesn't is how come it wasn't noticed in a modern network.

Who says Vodafone has a modern network? They haven't managed to get IPv6 working yet.

You need to open a new thread / support ticket as this has nothing whatsoever to do with the problem being discussed here, which was resolved last Thursday.

Yeah, move on, nothing to see here now you've got another problem.

No, this thread was discussing an extremely specific problem which is not the same as whatever issue you seem to be having. I'm trying to help you here as you simply won't get any assistance by posting further unrelated updates in this thread!
