usb3 Hard Drive Problems with THG3000

I  have a problem with 2 HDD, one 3TB and the other 6TB.   I have used both these usb3 HDD with other routers, the last being the BT Smart Hub2 and before that one of my own, a TP- Link and the HDD have always gone into power saving mode.  Something with the Vodafone WiFi Router THG3000 keeps the HDD active, I can hear the read/ write activityevery few seconds with the indictor light constantly flashing

At first I thought it could be compiling a media listing but this has just gone on too long, weeks infact. I cannot discard the router for my own TP-Link as I had planned because i was given false information when I signed up, namely that the VoIP phone connection used a seperate ethernet device.

There is no problem with accessing the HDD or it's contents over my local network, just the fact of the drives being kept constantly woking 24/7.  One is a mobile HDD and the other a desktop HDD, the contant churning of the drives will seriously shorten the products life

THE REAL POINT OF POST THIS IS THE FAILING OF THE VODAFONE'S ROUTER TO PROVIDE THE ANCILLARY FUNCTION OF "Share Hard Drive" WITHOUT RUINING THE HDD SHARED.  IF IT IS NOT SUPOSED TO WORK, WHY PROVIDE IT.   I find your attitude typical of many and it should be SIMPLEST IS BEST, just because something does not work you go out and buy another solution, regardless of expence, rather than complain, return or make a Guarantee claim .  You are just self justifying the method you choose to use.

Setup OK, but obviusly never used one as a file server.  I have used NAS in the past and had 2 major brands die on me with some data loss, unless you rely on the indexing of your files into ususal media classifications etc as per a Media Server, or are a business.  In view of my experience as a domestic user, i would never put all my eggs in one basket and therefore have duplicate backups, one of which for tha past 15 years has been by using the facility built into many Routers.  Why pay for another device and the power for it when you do not have to.

On the subjest of Security, do you have you NAS set up for online access.  The only way to be sure is no WiFi and no Router/Internet connection.

The THG3000 is a dummed down router and the only reason I am currently usuing it is because of the phone connection.

I use the USB ports on the THG3000 for connecting USB sticks. As far as I am aware that was one of the intended uses, the other being for the 4G backup.

For that it has performed perfectly for nearly 4 years.

I've never tried an actual hard drive, but if it didn't work to my satisfaction I would just find an alternative solution.

I really wouldn't expect a USB connection on an ISP supplied router to be a NAS alternative.

A usb stick is not a hard drive, Vf management page specifically mentions HARD DRIVE, my previous comments to CL stand.

If the router management has a setting it should work properly, forget NAS forget alternatives.  This is about a function which is not working as it should, if Vf don't want it to work then dumb it down like everthing else, it does even provide the correct link details.

It's not mis sold. You are complaining hard drive(s) connected to the USB sockets do not power down/go into power save mode.

I very much doubt you will find anywhere its says that will happen.

Yes I understand that may be what you expect, but if it doesn't (and I've never tried a hard drive on it) that doesn't mean it's faulty or mis sold.

The router continually makes read demand on the HDD every few seconds, this is not normal behaviour for any other router with a usb connection that I have ever had.   Why are you so keen to defend Vodafone?

If this is all tou are going to do, please stay off my post

@anoldfart  Just for information, on the TP-Link forum a contributor is complaining about the Archer C9 not supporting disk sleep mode.

Not all routers are alike. If VF supply a router without sleep mode there's nothing the customer can do apart from making alternative arrangements.

I don't use the THG3000 at all and my LAN USB disks are mounted on Raspberry Pi. Other external disks I power down with the PC they are connected to.

Thanks for that, I have never had any prodblems like that with my TP, it does not have enough capacity to index large HDD content but I don't care about that as i know where and what to look for in my roughly 250,000 files. Via my own TP any attached storage is available online as well as my local LAN

I would not expect a router to provide a power saving feature to any attached storage, it is usually a HDD feature to power down after a sepecific period of non use as used by most mobile HDD and even a lot of desktop.  BT Smart Hub 2 does not even officially support attached HDD sharing but it does, and allows them to power down.   That really is my problem, constant queries by the THG3000 keep the drives from power down and it is supposed to support attached HDD, if it did not have this feature I would have nothing to complain about.

Hi anoldfart et al.

I have joined vodafone within the last 10 days and have the new white PowerHub. I have upgraded from DSL to full fibre. I previously used my own modem/router with TalkTalk, a TPLINK VR2100 with USB port, and successfully connected a 4TB HDD with access on the local network, and remotely over the internet. This doesn't have a telephone port so can't connect my "landline".
I would like to duplicate this HDD scenario with this new Vodafone router but am having issues.

I can connect a pen drive OK and it sees it as a Mass Storage Device and has address info as "\\vodafone.powerhub/Mass_StorageDevice_1_43b" but I cannot connect to it even locally from my tablet. I use the previous info "\\vodafone............" as the host name; "admin" as the username, and the router password as the password in the fields required by CX file explorer.

When I connect the HDD, it sees it and it has a name, but no further information allowing connection.
Any help on this latest router and connecting a HDD would be fantastic. That is before I through the router into the wildlife pool at the bottom of my garden and leave within the 14 days and go somewhere else.
