Are Vodafone Throttling download speeds?

So up until the past few weeks I have had around 70-80 mbps, now when I run a speed test I get around 1-5mbps and when actually downloading a file I get around 1mbps.
However when I stream video my internet speed will go back to normal, this makes me think that download speeds are being throttled.
Is this happening to anyone else?

@jb_uk

It does sound like something is limiting your sync speed to 60Mbs, but what are your SNRs?

I would say they don't throttle/limit sync, these are mine:

  Downstream Upstream

Current Rate79999 kbps20000 kbps
Maximum Rate82790 kbps26638 kbps
Signal-to-Noise Ratio4.2 dB10.2 dB

Have you thought of trying the Vodafone router to see what it gives?

Here are the full stats at the moment:

SNRs are good, no?

Good idea re. the Vodafone router... will give that a go in the morning for comparison.

That's very strange, both your SNRs are 10, so you should easily have an 80/20 connection.

I'm wondering if your router is somehow requesting that. Yes it will be interesting to see what the Vodafone router gets. (I'm betting it will be 80/20)

Pretty much the same happening with the stock Vodafone router. Figures have reduced a little compared to yesterday but are pretty much the same between the stock Vodafone router and my BYOD Asus DSL-AC68U.

Is this just Dynamic Line Management (DLM) in action? Do Vodafone have any control over this now or is it still only something which Openreach can tweak? It's pretty annoying... I remember *10 years ago* in Australia my ISP (iiNet) let you log into your account and tweak how aggressive/stable you wanted DLM to be...

As it's the same, or even worse , on the Vodafone router it does seem likely to be be DLM. As far as I know Vodafone would need to ask Openreach to to do a reset and they always seem loath to do that.

Of course it's always possible there is a line problem and DLM is doing it's job of keeping your line stable. Do the SNR figure vary a lot each time you check them?

Any update on your Current/Maximum Rate?

I had a same issue with Sky, when connected I had 80/20, then I was messing up with different modems etc. and my Current/Maximum Rate went down 20 Mbps on download so phone them up after 10 days of nothing happening, they got the Openreach guy to come to measure the line,

found there was something wrong with the line, swapped it and I was back on 80/20 .....

I think that's the reason you can't get any deals with them (Sky) below £25 for VDSL2 80/20  as if there is a problem they will fix it unlike VF and others and reason I swapped to Vodafone (as they got £15.63/2y deal) , decision I may regret ......

#AA.net.uk are best at getting things fixed and you control your line from web portal, but diff. price

Yes. After a lot of faffing about, demanding escalations and direct contact with Level 2 support, plus chasing... they (I assume) requested a DLM reset. I'm now 74M down 19M up data rates from 95M down 27M up max rates. Much better. FastPath, no interleaving, good latency (sub 10ms). NB. figures are directly from the router so don't represent client throughput.

tl;dr - yes, it was DLM/banding.

Long story cut short.

I had dreadful speeds with VF. I kept logs and VF let me leave without penalty.

I am with another ISP and my speed is faster than when on VF and no speed issues, in fact the download speed has increased.

This is FTTC and copper to the house.

Those are the sync "symbol" rates and not what you'd see if throttling were happening.  The sysc rates are determined through negotiation between the OpenReach cabinet and the modem in the device you are using.

Theoretical maximums also exceed what OpenReach will supply over VDSL2, which from memory is 80/20.

*I can push my equipment to tell me that my maximum download sync would be 65Mbps, but due to issues it's never been above 49Mbps and is currently banded at 40Mbps (local issues that will are not going to be fixed, expected to migrate to FTTP in the near future), which is as high or higher than any of my neighbours.

**Banding can happen, but once again it's OpenReach and their equipment, not Vodafone that are responsible, and it's almost always for good reason.
