Slow and unreliable broadband in the evening

I've seen some posts about this , but they seem to suggest it's been fixed. Been with Vodafone since October and finding now that the speeds and reliability are poor in the evenings. Watching off iplayer and it will suddenly stop and pause for around a minute, several times. Really annoying. It's fine in the day. I've jumped through some hoops already, like changing from my own tplink router to the Vodafone one, made no difference. Also the tv is connected to the router direct with Ethernet cable and the tech person said to change the WiFi channel. When I explained that I didn't see how the WiFi channel would effect the wired connect she ignored it and insisted I change the channel of WiFi. Anyway. It's still happening. When I do a speed test while it's happening it can be anything from 1 to 15 mbps when it's usually around 35 to 40. Any help or advice?  I think it's due to more people using the internet but not sure. It's jumpy tv when using iplayer or itv hub, or Plex built in to the tv, but if I chromecast plex it seem ok which is odd. Help please

That's great to hear! I'll try that tonight then! Vodafone servers must be trash.

How do you do this?

Log in to your router, go to Internet - DNS&DDNS change to Manually and set either 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. (Google) or a mix of two and click apply.
Be aware if you use content controls this will stop them working.

You need to log into your router > Internet > DNS and DDNS. Change DNS to manual and then put the Google DNS settings in. I’ve never had an issue with my speeds at peak times but had massive issues with pages taking a while to start loading (once they start it’s quick) and a lot of my apps on my tv and PS4 would freeze or not start videos. Changing it fixed these issues for me. Vodafone’s DNS must not be up to the task.

That sounds like the exact issue I had, but never had at my old house!  I've changed to a mix of cloudflare and google, will see how that goes!

Thanks, changed them. Will see how it goes tonight.

For the lay person like me can you advise what this does?

I have a call tomorrow night with someone from the directors office apparently, regarding my complaint.

@migwire

DNS matches website urls with their IP address.

DNS servers convert internet names (URLs) we use such as vodafone.co.uk into I.P. addresses that computers use in this case 54.76.134.85. By changing to Cloudflare or Google it is hoped they will be better/faster at doing that job than the ones Vodafone supply.

Just google it, there will be lots of information.(probably too much)

I don't think it will help with slow download speeds at all.

DNS wasn't my problem, I had google dns already set up.

Good luck getting it fixed, I now have no issues being back with BT.
