I took out mobile broadband with currys with Vodafone as a supplier. I was told that I could cancel at any time by cancelling my direct debit which I did.
Last year I recieved a default on my credit report and had a creditor contact me regarding the missed payment which I wasnt aware i had! I moved 3 times in 6 months due to being homeless for a short while so I didn't receive any contact from vodafone.
As soon as I received notice I paid and have been trying ever since to get it sorted but cant find someone to speak to and get an answer on trying to remove the default.
It is now preventing me from progressing with my mortgage for a £50 default.
Can someone help me or point in the right direction.

Whoever gave you the advice to " I was told that I could cancel at any time by cancelling my direct debit which I did"
Was very poor advise. Who said this to you ?
All cancelling a Direct Debit does is stop Payments coming out of your bank account.
It does not stop the contractual agreement term between you and Vodafone.
To cancel a person has to contact Vodafone and give the required notice.
As payments were stopped and due to your circumstances Vodafone couldn't contact you to arrange collection of monies owed they can and will add a default which lasts 6 years even if the debt is paid off.
They can also sell a debt to a debt collection company.
The status on your Credit File changes from Outstanding to Settled instead.
You can speak to the Vodafone Social Media Teams via Contact-us-for-account-specific-queries who have a dedicated Credit File Specialist Team who can investigate but if they find the default warranted they won't remove it.

The advice came from a sales person in the shop I explained that I only needed broadband for a short period of time and then he followed to give me the advice I then followed!

Terrible advice indeed @Chris_murray
Do you have anything in writing in regards to what you was advised or was it verbal only in regards to cancelling ?
If verbal only then in reality you may have an issue proving what was said / advised unless the member of staff confirms that is what they advised you !
I truly wish you all the best with this situation you find yourself now in.

Currys Carphone Warehouse misselling.
If you told the sales advisor you only needed broadband for a short time, the store should have recommended you go the PAYG route, not sold you a 30 day contract subject to 30 days termination notice. You were also give totally poor and incorrect advise on how to terminate the contract.
Now Carphone Warehouse have got you in a lot of trouble and are the cause of you having poor credit rating with a default on your credit file preventing you from getting a mortgage or any other credit.
I would complain bitterly to this company and make sure they put right the problem they have caused. If this is not resolved to your satisfaction there is the Communications Ombudsman.
