Mobile Broadband - Can I use a normal SIM?

My mobile boradband contract is up and I can get a good deal from a reseller for a normal phone SIM. Will a normal phone Sim work in a mobile broadband device? It's much cheaper than what is being offered on the Vodafone data only SIM.
