We purchased a mobile WiFi on a one month contract with Vodafone but purchased from Currys. We only wanted it for our holiday so was told to ring Vodafone to give 30 days notice as we only wanted it for a month. We were told we cannot give 30 days notice until we have had it for a month as it was purchased from a third party, so basically we have to pay for 2 months even if we don't want it. They said this is be sure it's classed as a return in the first month. This is ridiculous isn't it ??.

@esterlina I think the problem is that the 30-day contracts are intended for those who are wanting a longer-running arrangement, but without entering into a 24-month commitment which would incur penalties for early termination. Currys should have been suggesting a PAYG device as more suited to your requirements - look at the options on https://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/dongles-and-mobile-wi-fi/
Depending on your holiday dates, are you able to take advantage of the 30-day return option (see the link on that page)?

@esterlina I started wondering whether the returns policy would apply if you had bought through a third party - from this, it looks as though it wouldn't be Vodafone's policy but Currys' that would apply. My feeling is that Currys may have given you incorrect advice, and that you might get further by taking it up with them.

Thanks for your replies. I have already spoken to Currys but no joy, referred back to Vodafone. I spent hours being passed from pillar to post. I think it's unfair to call it a one month contract when it is actually two but I guess I will have to pay for it. I do want to keep the device but only for holidays so can I still just buy a Vodafone SIM PAYG when needed ?.

Yes, you will be able to get a PAYG Data SIM to go into the device*. You would have to change the settings from PayM to PAYG - it's described here, if it doesn't happen automatically, but don't hesitate to come back to this MBB board if you run into difficulties.
* I think you might have to go to a Vodafone store to get a PAYG Data SIM, but they'd probably be able to help you get things set up appropriately.
Edited to add: Just seen @Mexicanwave's replies. I'm not 100% sure that the same SIM card will do for both PayM and PAYG, but they'd be able to send out a replacement card if necessary as part of the switch to PAYG!
