Data stuck on 'E' until manual reconnect

I've been on Vodafone for six months now and I've been generally happy with the service.

I've always had the issue that when I leave home my data would be stuck on 'H' until I manually toggled airplane mode on and off at which point it would reconnect to a very strong 4g and stay in 4g.

This wasn't so much an issue because the data was still good enough to receive notifications and WhatsApp messages etc. if I did forget to manually switch.

However, last week Vodafone turned off 3g in my area so now I get 'E' instead of 'H' which means I get no data and sometimes no network service at all.

What can be done to fix this? Thanks.
