3rd party router on Gigafast in Milton Keynes

Hi. I have a fast, working gigafast connection using the supplied VF router. However, it is missing some functionality that I require for home users, eg DNS settings via DHCP server, plus a load of stuff I can't do for work, such as vlans.

I have tried to configure my old Draytek 2950n which has a wan side connection via ethernet. Plugged it into CPE, entered the PPOE username and password. But getting 'no response from server'. Have tried vlan 101 and 2000 but same result. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

3rd line have come through with some additional and essential info! Need to be on vlan 911 to get a connection.

That is weird. Can't see the QoS settings page (maybe the image is being moderated?) but if it's all switched off then it's probably not an issue.

Maybe others will have better suggestions. But if you got those results with both routers, I think that's a sign it's not actually the router causing the problem. Try to rule out all other variables I guess... tried another ethernet cable? Try another wired device? If none of that helps, I'd give Vodafone a call, as it could be a problem with the line or the fibre box. Ask to get put through to the Gigafast team (they have their own department).

Regarding the modem/router talk... it's all kind of confusing because the terms aren't always used consistently, but my limited understanding is that we need 4 components:
a modem handles the physical change in interface (e.g. fibre or telephone line)
a router which handles the interchange of traffic between the LAN and WAN
a switch which handles wired LAN connections

and a WiFi access point which, obviously, provides WiFi

Most people in the UK use an all in one device which does all 4 on DSL. On Gigafast we are provided with a black fibre box, which is the modem. The Vodafone router does the other 3, but not very well!

The Ubiquiti router I've ordered is a router and switch, but the routing is the hard bit. I'm hoping it can do that better than the other all-in-ones. I'll post back once I've been using it for a few days in a week or so...

Yes all QOS stuff is off, and yes I've had same results with both the VF provided router and my Netgear.

ive had an engineer visit due to the cut out issues I had which have now been solved by using my Netgear.

They had a look at the line and said every thing was fine.

i do have this whole situation being investigated but thought as I am now using my Netgear router/modem all in one that some one here would know if there was something else at hand.

as I under stand it you get routers and then you get all in one routers with the modem part in it.

so what your saying is that the ONT box is also the modem so in essence if I wanted to upgrade my Netgear I would only need to buy a router? Not a modem/router like I have with the Netgear D6400 I have now?

Your Netgear D6400 is a DSL (ADSL/VDSL) modem, but you aren't using DSL anyway, so you're correct that you don't need it.

Hard to find routers in the UK that aren't DSL modems, though. Particularly if you also want them to be wireless access points (which the D6400 also is).

Got ya!
maybe I will order and try a different router and try that then.

ive changed all Ethernet cable to cat6 and the cabinet is on,y around 15 feet from my house so I'm confused as to why I'm not getting full speeds.

it's straight fibre to the home so I'm sat here scratching my head.

if the line is fine the it's got to be equipment and I've had a new ONT box fitted last week so it has to be the router that's suppressing the speeds especially if the upload is as it should be.

Maybe the Netgear I have is old so a newer version may help.

as for their router what with the drop outs that's obviously faulty. Maybe I could also get them to send me a new one and try that also.

thanks for your help though

The ONT takes the signal from the optical fibe and outputs it to the ethernet port and vice versa. It is not a modem.

The Netgear D6400 has a Wan ethernet port which you can connect to the ONT.  If you do this you will not be using the modem circuits in the router, but they won't be doing you any harm.

What speed did Vodafone say you would get when you signed up?  There was a recent Ofcom ruling on this subject.

Hi, they didn't. I placed my order in the Vodafone shop up the city centre in MK. No minimum speed was mentioned. They asked what package I wanted and I opted for the 500 mbps.

im not sure why I wouldn't receive that when it's a straight fibre to the home install and the cabinet is literally a few feet from my home.

if I were getting around 440ish I'd be happy but I'm not getting any where near that and it's not even consistent.

Hi I have Netgear R8000P,  have same problem to connected internet , like many people said , when you used user name and password from Vodafone going to bottom advance settings to VLAN and change to 911 after that evening will be working .I was playing nearly week to call both support teams and answer is in forum

Getting my fibre install soon.  Just posting to check that any cable router will work with the fibre termination point that ciyfibe/voda will install my home.   Currently I am on  FTTC with voda, using the old Openreach VDSL modem connected with ethernet to a TP-Link AC750 Archer C2 router.   From what I have read in this forum I should be able to continue to use my Archer C2,  just a matter of using the new password and username that I will get from Voda.  Am I correct in this assumption?

Following on from last post (sorry couldnt find an edit button).

These are my current working settings, but I cannot find any option for VLAN.  The router that I have does use a dedicated port to connect to the openreach modem, does this make a difference?

Its sometimes necessary to use the IPTV settings (in manual mode) on a third-party router to set the VLAN , but how this works varies from router to router!
