Hi. I have a fast, working gigafast connection using the supplied VF router. However, it is missing some functionality that I require for home users, eg DNS settings via DHCP server, plus a load of stuff I can't do for work, such as vlans.
I have tried to configure my old Draytek 2950n which has a wan side connection via ethernet. Plugged it into CPE, entered the PPOE username and password. But getting 'no response from server'. Have tried vlan 101 and 2000 but same result. Anyone got any suggestions?

3rd line have come through with some additional and essential info! Need to be on vlan 911 to get a connection.

You are perfectly correct when you say that Vodafone doesn't support voip on 3rd party routers, but that's not the same as saying it's not possible to get it working
To be honest I've not been fussed about losing my landline since changing my router. I only ever got calls from PPI salesman and from the Mother-in-law on the landline. Having said that I would be interested if anyone is able to report any success with a voip config...

Has anyone tried a managed switch to handle the Vlan tagging?

I'd expect that most who have home network switches don't have managed switches but have smart switches, many of the latter ought to be capable of expressing a VLAN ID on the ONT facing "uplink", but it's not something I'd bet the farm on working properly!

I meant a smart switch that supports Vlan tagging bi guess. I will just have to give it a go as I need a way to get a mesh system working over the house.

While I'm currently only on Superfast2, I had a look at the possibility of getting a couple of *Nano PI R2S (other capable SBCs are available), so that they could be programmed to sit between a router and a modem/ONT/PON **transparently and handle tagging and possibly username/passwords. But the cost of betting the farm on that solution is higher than it is for a simple 5 port smart switch.
*Not so much for my own connection, the ability to set these up for others. VF staffers - I'm am aware of the glaring issue here!
**If this is even possible and does not introduce error, significant latency, or other errors. If I give this a try I'm likely to look for a lower power alternative so it can be powered by the router USB ports too!

I was hoping to get this working as per the Google support link and use a
Then get a tp link TL-SG105E and hope I can get it working.
I've no idea if there is any security implications with this sort of setup though.

It should be no less secure since you are connecting via the WAN port on the Google WiFi, and the idea is that all that changes in your packets is that the VLAN tag is inserted. It should just form a transparent bridge and so NAT and everything should work. Once/if you get it running then you might want to do some tests to see if you need to reduce the MTU/MRU values by a notch.
