Solution

3rd party router on Gigafast in Milton Keynes

Hi. I have a fast, working gigafast connection using the supplied VF router. However, it is missing some functionality that I require for home users, eg DNS settings via DHCP server, plus a load of stuff I can't do for work, such as vlans.

I have tried to configure my old Draytek 2950n which has a wan side connection via ethernet. Plugged it into CPE, entered the PPOE username and password. But getting 'no response from server'. Have tried vlan 101 and 2000 but same result. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

I have no experience of the D7000, but its a ADSL/VDSL router and the error message suggests maybe it's trying to use the DSL input.

Does this offer any advice:

https://www.internode.on.net/nodesupport/guides/internet_access/nbn/fttp/netgear_nighthawk_d7000

Especially steps 8,9&10.

  • Click Advanced Setup.
  • Click WAN Setup.
  • Select Must use Ethernet WAN from the WAN Preference drop down.

Yep (you tried an alternate ethernet cable? as you can occasionally get a bud! I'd recommend using a good quality CAT6 cable if possible).

You able to post any photos of the physical setup? And/or the ISP config page of the D7000?

this is the router setup page. Also thank you for taking the time to help. The physical set up is the d7000 connected to a small black (ont I belive) box with an ethernet cable ( the same setup as the Vodafone supplied router)

All looks fine on the screen and connectors (P.S. I would edit or remove the photo of the setup screen as its showing your Vodafone username).

Per the post from "jayach", have you ensured the router isn't trying to use the DSL connection (setups listed below)?

  1. On the home screen, click Advanced.
  2. Click Setup.
  3. Click Advanced Setup.
  4. Click WAN Setup.
  5. Select Must use Ethernet WAN from the WAN Preference drop down.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click Basic.
  8. Click Internet.
  9. Select United Kingdom from the Country drop down.
  10. Select Other from the ISP drop down.
  11. Tick the checkbox next to Use VLANID.
  12. Enter 911 in the text box next to Use VLANID.
  13. Enter 0 (zero) in the Priority text box.
  14. Click Yes under Does your Internet connection require a login?
  15. Select PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) from the Encapsulation drop down.
  16. Enter your Vodafone username and password.
  17. Leave the other settings as they are and click Apply.

Thanks for the reply. I have entered the information as you suggest but no joy I am afraid. Keeps failing to find a connection claiming that there is no cable attached.

Really odd thought here, but remove the VLAN tags from the WAN setup page and add them to the IPTV setup page if you have one - using the identifier of the new WAN port.  Sorry If I'm being a bit vague here, I'm just suspecting that the VLAN tags may not be being applied to the WAN when entered on it's set up page.

Per earlier post; there should be an IPTV sub menu within the VLAN menu.

Additionally, try a different ethernet cable between to Vodafone ONT and the router.

Othank you for taking the time to help. I Will try when I next get the chance.

I found the below setup guide on another ISPs forum (I've slightly amended for Vodafone). The individual found (see last couple of steps a potential oddity in setting up the D7000).

I can't personally test the process, but people appear to have had success with the process (Although it was for a different ISP).

Setup Process

1. Power down the Default ISP Router

2. Connect the D7000 router to the Vodafone wall mounted OTA via Ethernet cable. Make sure the Ethernet is plugged into the 'Ethernet WAN' port on the back of the router.

3. Power on the OTA (If not already on) and the D700 router.

4. Log into your router and set up your admin account (Skip the auto set up genie process). Ensure the latest D7000 router firmware is installed. Best process is to download the firmware directly from NetGear, then install it on the router. Head to advanced> Administration> Router Update. Note that you will need to extract the .chk file. This is the file you need to use for the update.

5. Update your WAN settings. This is important because the router automatically expects an DSL connection which of course you wont have if on fibre. Head to Advanced> Setup> WAN Setup. Under ‘WAN Preference’ select ‘Must Use Ethernet WAN’. Click ‘Apply’ and wait for your router to update.

6. Head to Advanced> Setup>Internet Setup and enter the following information:

  • Country: UK
  • ISP: Vodafone
  • Transfer Mode & DSL: Should be unable to select based step 5
  • Make sure ‘enable this interface’ is ticked and the drop down above is ‘Internet’
  • Tick ‘Use VLANID’ and set the value to ‘911’
  • Tick ‘Yes’ for ‘Does your internet connection require a login’
  • Encapsulation: PPPoE
  • Login: Your Vodafone username
  • Password: Your Vodafone password
  • Service Name: leave empty
  • Connection Mode: ‘Always On’
  • Internet IP Address: ‘Get Dynamically from ISP
  • Tick ‘Use These DNS Servers’.
  • Set the primary DNS server to 1.1.1.1 and secondary DNS server to 8.8.8.8
  • NAT: ‘Enable’
  • Router MAC Address: Use Default MAC Address
  • Double check everything and click ‘Apply’

7. At this point the router will apply the settings and re-boot. One of two things will happen. Either the next time you connect to your rooter it will have connected to the internet and everything will be working fine. If however you log in and there is still no internet connection head to step 8.

8. Log back into your router and click ‘Setup Wizard’. Follow the step by step process. Note you will be asked for your Vodafone login and password as above. It will also show ‘VLAN ID’ as 0 – don’t worry you can’t edit this and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Once the steps are completed the router will then attempt to make a connection with the ISP – you will see it doing this on screen. Once done the router will re-boot and then you should be connected.

I know step 8 reads counter intuitive but the impression I got was that by entering the internet details in advance, it helps the auto set up get the job done. What might be interesting is to see if immediately after step 5 you can move straight to step 8.

thank you for such a detailed solution. I will give this a try and post back.
