Hi!

I am trying to make a VPN server using Outline VPN. Its telling me

Please review them and make sure to allow incoming TCP connections on ports ranging from 1024 to 65535.

Although when I try to open a port range as it told me to I get this error message in my routers webpage

The selected port cannot be configured as it is reserved for internal usage. Please use a different port.

I am not able to change the ports it is asking for. Is there any way of opening up the ports required?

@Leb Which port numbers are you trying to open, that range in the subject line is *huge*.

If it's one that the router is really sulking over it then you may have to get another router, I am presuming that you are using the Vodafone THG3000.

This Reddit suggests that there is some flexibility in the ports used.

@Leb Actually another thought just popped up. If the VPN host is on a known IP address then you may be able to specify the ports just for that address. I don't know from the original message how you are trying to define the port access.

Sorry for not making it very clear.

I have got some new information and when installing outline I get this in my terminal

You won’t be able to access it externally, despite your server being correctly
set up, because there's a firewall (in this machine, your router or cloud
provider) that is preventing incoming connections to ports 18118 and 57308.

Make sure to open the following ports on your firewall, router or cloud provider:
- Management port 18118, for TCP
- Access key port 57308, for TCP and UDP

So I then open up the ports required, and on the outline manager that is used to connect with the server to make access keys for people to use the VPN, I put in the apiurl it wants me to and I still get that same message about opening up 1024 to 65535.

I wonder if that's actually an error or just a friendly warning. Quite possibly just a warning as the machine the server is running on has no control over the ports (no firewall installed) Can a VPN connection be made from the net?

As in connect to a vpn?

What specific ports are you attempting to use?

As for Outline VPN, if you are trying to protect everything on your network using a VPN, you have to understand that a badly set up VPN roughly doubles the exposure of your network rather than reducing it!  Also, if you want to run your own VPN and have all your local devices connect through it, then you'd almost certainly be better off using a router that supports that functioning (most third-party routers have this ability).

*Don't believe the hype*

A VPN server needs a maximum of just two ports open. The one traffic will go over, I'm not sure on your server but for OpenVPN the default is/was 1194. The second port will only be needed if you want to access the server's admin panel externally, again the default for OpenVPN would be 943

Suggest you go into the config and work out exactly which port(s) you actually need to open and work from there.

I only give OpenVPN examples as that's the one I'm familiar with.
