HOW TO: Use a third party router on Vodafone VDSL

On Firday afternoon Vodafone UK sent a corporate email telling their support team that they can now give out Broadband username and passwords.

I have now set up my own router, and here's what i did.

Step 1 Ring VF on 08080034515 and get your username and password. The support team member then emailed me my Log in info.

Step 2 Swap your router. Keep your VF router in case you ever get an issue and need tech support as they will not support your 3rd party device

Step 3 In your routers web interface access the WAN settings. Set connection type to PPPoE, enter username and password and leave all settings as default EXCEPT enable 802.1Q and set Vlan tag to 101.

Step 4 Save settings and apply. Your router should now connect to VF. Mine took a couple of minutes to get a connection and another couple from the router showing it was connected to actually being able to access the net

Step 5 After a few minutes the connection dropped, and it would not connect again. After investigation I was told this is to do with VF registering your router on there network. Hard reset your router. Power it down remove the power cord for 30 seconds and power back on.

Step 6 Enjoy

This is just based on my experience of setting up my router ASUS DSL-AC68U, YMMV. However the ASUS is syncd at 73.6meg, when the VF router syncd at 72.1 and I have noticed a marked improvment in performance.

I’ll try this new tp link one this evening and hope it’ll be straight forward to do. You may hear me screams around 10pm... thanks for the info it’s much appreciated. Just want a stable decent connection as it’s very intermittent at the moment so really hope this will resolve it..

I hear you the vf router is the worst i have ever had from any isp provider but the speed of the line and connection is prefect shame they gave out such a poor piece of kit with there service.

I’m hoping it is router and not the line. I’ve only had the fibre for a few weeks so not sure if the line is still settling etc.. or it’s the DLM the ISP do for the first weeks of a new connection.

Any improvement?

My speeds seem to have got better but still a lot of drop outs

How strange! I’m sort of the opposite! No drop outs yet but speed hasn’t improved at all. Just the same as I was getting with the VF router. Does seem more stable though but was hoping for a speed improvement

Hi Jonny

I would appreciate a little help and advice please. I too obtained my PPPoE username and password this week. I bought a TP Link AC2800 modem router to replace the VF tin can.

I have tried to configure it as per your post. It has settings for most ISPs built in but not VF of course. I set the VLAN id to 101 as you advised and entered my PPoE details but I cannot connect to the internet. I don't understand what you mean by enable 802.1Q. I do not seem to have such an option on my router.

Can you help please?

I am going to ask VF to confirm my PPPoE details as well since the 1st router they sent me did not arrive and they sent me another. I'm wondering whether the details given correspond with the missing one and not the one in use.

Very grateful for any advice.

Thanks

@Bunn
How are you getting on the TP link router?

Did you follow the steps provided by @chrisb84 at all? If so, please let us know if you've managed to get everything working.

Sorry, I dont have specialised knowledge,  only the knowledge of what worked for me on my ASUS router.

AFAIK If you have set a vlan tag then the 802.1q is enabled anyway.

Did you hard reset the router?  I had to do that to get a connection.

Good luck

Jonny

Hi Jonny

Thanks for the info. All working great now. VF confirm the the POoR details will sync ANY router and they are not specific to any particular piece of equipment. Obvious really but of interest.
